Burlington Northern's Scenic Subdivision

This is the beginning of the story about the building of my N Scale layout. The railroad is the Burlington Northern, the place is Seattle, and the year is 1994 before the merger that formed the BNSF. It is mostlty freelanced with some places and indusrties based loosely on the prototype. This is to allow me to model what I would like to on my layout.
The home that my wife and myself built earlier this year has one bedroom that I have laid claim to and called "My train room".

The two photo's below show each end of the room with nothing in yet.




With the above blank canvas and this forum available, I will be posting regular updates showing the progress made to my layout.

Havinglived in Seattle for several years not long after your modeled period, I'll be interested to see how you interpret my favorite sciences.

The room is 19ft long and 13ft wide. The layout will be an L shaped multi level shelf set up, along the one long wall and in front of the window. I am still trying to get the track plan converted to the correct format to allow me to post it here.

I like it...but I model BN 1992-95ish...

haven't decided where I'll finally base my layout at either...right now thinking Spokane/Funnel area...as that is where I live, and I like the area alot

Kevin have you looked at the CarrTracks website?  It has a lot of photo's, though a lot of them are from the 70's/80's so it's a little before your time frame.  Here's the link  http://www.carrtracks.com/

Thank you for the comments, and especially for the "carrtracks" link. I would like to come across to the USA someday and see the area I am modelling myself. At present I am getting all my information from websites and books, with additional inspiration from other modellers efforts in train magazines and the like.

Any information is appreciated. Thanks again.

I currently live in the Seattle area.  I'm about to go on a deployment for a few months but when I get back I'll be happy to help you anyway I can.  FWIW my wife is a professional photographer so if you need any particular photo's let me know.

Thanks J. Great to know. I may take you up on your offer.

I would like to show what progress I have made so far with regards to my layout construction. I wanted to go the shelf layout route but did not want to install wall bands with shelf brackets because of the drilling into the walls. I wanted to have free standing uprights that could be easily disassembled, packed away and re-used if I moved or got to old for the hobby. The room can be effortlessly converted back to a bedroom with no repairs or re-painting.

I thus came up with the following system. I drew the parts up on Cad and had them laser cut. Below are the parts on the laser machine.


I then had the parts welded where required, then sent to powder coating. All the parts are shown below ready for assembly.


Below are two of the uprights in position. These uprights support the top level ( Level 1 ) and the light box.


In the next photo I have fitted the light box with diffuser, and one strip of LED.s. I have still to determine the level of lighting that makes me happy. once I have decided, the light boxes can be wired correctly and closed.


I have then attached one of the upper shelf ( modules ) . All the parts bolt together. I have also fitted a temporary facia to frame the layout and to hide the light box. this will eventually be painted black.


I then moved the ( Level 2 ) benchwork into position, placed a make shift backdrop into position, and added a train or two. I will now take this opportunity to finalise bench heights.


I plan to dedicate this weekend to more layout construction. I have two more uprights that have come back from the powder coaters so I have my work cut out. I will hopefully have an update posted on Sunday evening.

That is some impressive bracketry. I figure you did stuff in that vein professionally? Looks great. Got a track plan yet?

Thank you Specter3. I made the brackets at work. I am a manager in a laser cutting company ( Draughtsman by profession ) so I have all the tools available. The cost of the parts for me is comparable to timber, if not cheaper. The best thing is that it is so easy. I design and draw it on CAD, post it to the machine from my computer to be cut then bolt it together in the train room when I get it home. The bending and welding is all done by staff in the factory, before being sent out to a company that does the powder coating.

I have been busy with my track plan. Although the drawings are not complete, they do give an idea of what I envisage for my layout.
 
I have not given any of the places names as yet as I am still to finalise this aspect. The names in brackets will most probably stay, any help and advise will be appreciated.
I will give a brief description of a typical train making the journey across my layout, - please follow on the schematic and track plans.



The train will begin it's journey from the hidden staging on Level 4 ( Spokane ) headed towards Seattle. The staging comprises of eight tracks, two of which are the East and West main line, as well as three East bound and three West bound storage tracks. There should be space to hold 2 trains on each of these tracks, ( 12 trains in total ) .
I intend to install some type of camera and monitor system so operators can view each end of the staging.



The train will proceed up Helix 1 to Level 1, go past the timber mill and enter the first stretch of single mainline. After crossing the river it will return back to double track and enter Helix 2 .



As the train leaves Helix 2 onto Level 2 it will pass the Cargill grain elevator and the container port. ( Compressed to fit ), before travelling past the South Seattle Industrial park.
The Industrial park will be the main focus of attention on my layout. I got the inspiration for this from reading an article in the June 2002 edition of the Model Railroader magazine.
The article features the operations of Progressive Rail, a company that serves numerous customers in an Industrial Park who use rail transport to receive and despatch goods.
On my layout, this service will be provided by the Burlington Northern. I feel that it will offer a nice feature for operations.



The mainline reduces down to a single track again before entering Helix 1 for a second time to proceed down to Level 3.
On entering Level 3, the train moves past the Diesel servicing Facility and the Main Yard. I am thinking of calling this yard, Balmer yard although in reality this yard is located on the North of Seattle.
Beyond the yard the train passes a small town ( still to be named ) before entering the last Helix down to Hidden staging again ( Tacoma or Portland Oregon )



To close, I have included a couple of photo's to show further progress made on the layout over the weekend. I have completed the Level 1 corner curve and semi – completed the Level 2 Container Port module.
I intend to get to the hardware next weekend to purchase a sheet of masonite for the backdrops of these two scenes.

This weekend I managed to get the module for the river scene on level 1 almost complete and in place. A few small tasks on the section need to be completed.

I made a makeshift crossing but the bridge will eventually comprise of 5 Micro Engineering, 80 ft bridge sections supported on the piers shown.





Next weekend, I am hoping to get the corner benchwork and roadbed for level 3 constructed and in place.

I spent this weekend constructing the corner module for level 3. The design comprises a small double line loop to connect the small town to Balmer Yard.

Very impressive! 

I'm looking at tearing out my Dad's layout in his basement, and reconfiguring it, as it's a duck under, he's having issues getting in and out.  With his health, I'm also thinking going modular so it can be moved out quickly if we have too.  This is a very cool set up!

Thank You for the comments Matt.

When I was planning my layout, my one given was that it would not have any duck unders. I am not getting any younger and the aches and pains do creep in when doing certain jobs on the benchwork...
I am expecting the last two uprights to come back from the powder coaters before the end of the week so I will spend the weekend making further progress on the top level. I am also moving things around in the train room as I would like to set up the level 2 benchwork in the middle of the room so I can start to work on that.

I should be able to post another progress report on Sunday evening.
