That Reading prototype looks like turn-of-the-last -century.  I was hoping for something built at least in the 1930s forward.

The RDG Color Guide indicates they were built in 2 groups of 5, the first in the early 19-teens, the other in 1924. So they do pre-date the 30s.

I like the F49.  But can it really be that the only suitable cars are Pennsy prototypes?   Did every road literally build its own handful of well cars back in the early 20th century?

The LV had a single car that was similar to the F49, but it had fewer holes in the side sill. Apparently the design was available from GSC. I'm sure roads like the PRR that invested tremendous resources into freight car research and development built their own, but smaller roads likely would have bought existing designs.

No other well cars?  Argh.  All right, how about depressed center flats.  40' to 45' foot cars.   I love the New Haven transformer cars, for obvious reasons, but I don't think that's a suitable prototype.

These were an off-the-shelf design from Maxson, so surely roads other than the EL had them:

Only 3 were rostered by EL and conveyed to CR.

Or go modern with these DODX well cars:

Actually, this would be a good car for MTL to do - collectibility, seen nationwide, etc...

Remember that acorn thing that that was said to be a crashed UFO in Pennsylvania some years ago . Could it be a cask that was launched into a too low earth orbit by some program or equipment malfunction .

So I've gotta ask, why go for something so unique and limited in use, as opposed to something that someone would want a fleet of (something like PRR ore cars)?

FWIW, there's an NYC car that looks awfully close to the D&H car (apart from the brake wheels).  But the poor photos make it hard to be sure.

I did a little research today.  Since the car components were purchased by D&H from GSC, it stands to reason that GSC also sold the product to other roads.  So it's a matter of finding out how many.  It's possible the NYC car is the same prototype.

The LV had a single car that was similar to the F49, but it had fewer holes in the side sill. Apparently the design was available from GSC. I'm sure roads like the PRR that invested tremendous resources into freight car research and development built their own, but smaller roads likely would have bought existing designs.

I'll check to see if it is the same prototype, or close.

ExactRail (sort of) tooled this car in HO, so I suspect they have plans to release it in N as well.

Actually, this would be a good car for MTL to do - collectibility, seen nationwide, etc...

The 1970s is about as late as I will go.  The modern era is crowded and has fewer prototypes/railroads to choose from.  The transitional era is where most of the ESM products will be derived from.

So I've gotta ask, why go for something so unique and limited in use, as opposed to something that someone would want a fleet of (something like PRR ore cars)?

Because an opportunity has arisen to tool a car in the States economically and still meet the quality bar that ESM has set, but I'm limited on the complexity of the car and the degree of difficulty in assembly due to domestic labor costs.  A car that has no etched brass roofwalk or end platforms to glue on fits the bill.  What the other manufacturers have announced, or are about to release, or are working on currently (whether publicly announced yet or not) also factor into the equation.  A well car is a good choice - if enough roads can be confirmed for a particular prototype.  Besides, ESM just released a model that people have said they wanted fleets of, so that theory is being put to the test currently.

These unique coil cars of NYC origin would be nice! http://lionelllc.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/crcoilcar.jpg

Except that ESM has been PRR/PC/CR heavy in recent years and some other areas of the North American continent need to be addressed.

Most modelers would want at least one though.

What he said.  Patience Grasshopper.  8)

That said, the ore car is still a PRR/PC/CR limited piece of equipment that was regional at best.  Well cars did travel off road.

NO.

"No" it hasn't been Pennsy-heavy, or "no" other areas of the continent don't need to be addressed?  It's not as if ESM is dropping Pennsy products.  I can assure you that Pennsy will be well represented over the next five years, probably more than any other road, and Conrail will be a close second.

Sounds good to me.  I look forward to what you will be offering.
