I'm modeling 1978-1980 this era seen some of the most diversity in equipment you had everything from some old F units on up to the SD50 and rolling stock wise you had just about everything plus all the cool paint schemes.

I've heard some hobby shop owners say that N scalers are more biased toward running than modeling, so diesel is more popular in N.  I guess this comes from N trak.  Judging from the work I see here, modeling is alive and well in N.  Is the popularity of early diesels due to our average age, or to the in general better (out of the box) running characteristics of diesel vs. steam?

Ann Arbor, I go from Mikados to GP-38s (2 were retired this spring)
Most every thing else, the end of the dark ages to the beginning of the merger madness (74-'86) concentrating more on '78-82.
With the occasional FA-2 thrown in, even FA-1's in NYC.
Other roads, DM, DTI, GBW, CNW, SOO, GTW, some LS&I and DEEX.
Also, for some strange reason, I gravitate to RR's that ran in states that start in the letter "M".
BAR, BN, MEC, MP, CR & some NYC .

Go figure.

I'm modelling the Great Northern in the mid 60's. BEFORE they came out with that fugly Big Sky Blue (a.k.a tootie fruitie ice cream) paint scheme. At least I'm trying too. Most of it ain't all that hard. (If you excuse my lack of artistic talent.) But it sure would be nice if we had a few more early mid 60's era cars & trucks. I mean... how many Wiking Chevelles can one man put on a layout?

Rock Island - Spring of 1983.
Three years after the actual shutdown.

I run what I like. It's as simple as that.  :D

CN and CP in southern Ontario in the 1987-89 era. Not attempting to model a specific area or specific lines, but when I have the space to build a layout will include mainline and branch line operations of both roads... looking to capture the 'feel' of RR in that era. Like many, I model what I recall from my formative years of railfanning. The trains, and music, were so much better back then.

This year? I'm modeling 2012.Next year? 2013. :D

I was 6 weeks old first time I rode behind steam.I was 6 months old the second time.

I was in my 40s before I ever saw a real steam locomotive. The sound under power was impressive, but I still prefer diesels.

I model the SP from about 1950-to the end of Daylight and Black Widow paint (officially) 1958ish. With a concentration around 1955. I do have SP motive power to the end of the SP. I also have equipment from the AT&SF, UP and WP.

Enjoy,
Wolf

1983-86: The Seaboard System years.  I find that keeping the era limited does help keep impulse purchases down.  However, I admit that I have a few anachronisms that I run, e.g., a pair of SCL FP7s (the prototypes were retired in the early 1970s).

Late steam era.  No diesels owned but some Southern diesels borrowed for demonstrations.

Results are pretty interesting so far. One surprise - I thought there would be more steam-only modelers. Live and learn.

What LS&I stuff do you have?

Thomas
RS-3 1604
A few ore cars (Thank you Atlas for more LS&I), and several boxcars.
I planning on getting some U30C's to do the 2300 series U23C's, and eventually Atlas ( I hope) will come out with some RSD units.
