+1 Jason your work is incredible. I have never seen that level of detail as-cast.  How do you get the mold to come off the finer stuff?  Sooo geeked to make the chassis...  8)

I dont know about everyone else but my advertisement here a lot lately has been a personal cnc setup. That kind of got me thinking of why not pull the frame out of one of the existing brass engines, remeasure the driver recesses for currently available driver spares from Kato and have some small outfit cnc new frames? Or mold and cast them? If it has been thought of and explored, what were the issues?

I would imagine that, evenif you could supply good set art, the fees for getting a local shop to do a one off would be considerable. You might be able to find a community college teacher to do it as a class project though.

Lemosteam—Yeah!!  :scared: you will never hear that from me.  Great fear of the almighty!  Lets revise my previous reply....I am not bad at doing castings.....  It takes to alot of work removing the master to get these results!!  :D

my current plan is to cast modified GS4 frames and use a tender drive

Well, Jason can take it back, but I can say it, LOUD: [HE IS INCREDIBLY GOOD!]
I've done some casting, but the detail Jason manages to squeeze out of urethane is nothing short of amazing. :o

Heck, if someone comes up with drawings, I'll take a look at them.
The more that's made the cheaper it gets.
What to make them out of, free machining brass?

I know every one is all hot & bothered about DU, but I'm not really intrested in machining expensive, toxic, flamable metals.

This will sound off the wall, but it is possible to build a small CNC...

Couldn't resist anything made out of plumbing parts. It uses a Dremel. I was thinking it could cut locomotive frames and aluminum molds for casting.

Ok;for those of you who have not owned one of Superturbine's castings, feast ye eyes.  This gent's work is incredible and I took some macro shots to prove it.  Unbelieveable.  I fankly did not believe that this level of detail is possible.  I'm still scratching my head at how he gets his mold off the casting.  Really sorry to gush here but Damn!

Yes, those are holes in the stanchions:


The hoses on the air tank below measure 0.010"...


There's air behind those grab handles:


The surfaces are as smooth as any model I've seen...

You guys are embarrassing me!  :D But I am really glad you like the castings and feel they are "worth" the money.  As for the stations they are left in place to mark exactly where the Gold Medal Models Stanchions need to go.  I am not sure the cast stanchions will be strong enough to endure average handling, but they might once handrails are installed.  My theory is to try and cast as much detail into the mold as possible, repair/replace what does not turn out perfect.

Those really are clean and crisp.   Especially note how sharp the edges are along the bottoms of the walkways.  There's no flash,
blobs, or curvy wurvy edges to true up, which is common with castings.  That's some first-class work right there.
