Last time we did the ex-W&LE cars that had been repainted to NKP. This time, it's the cars that NKP bought new and the arrangement of the lettering is a bit different. Of course we are also doing W&LE cars in their original W&LE paint this time too so it's a good time to be a Nickel Plater...

The Hallet cars look interesting, but where did they run?

The NKP cars look great!  I'm modeling 1990-ish, and the claim that the last of these were retired in 1998 is very interesting.  There couldn't have been too many of them left by then, but I'm curious what kind of service these would have been in during the early 1990's.  I've heard claims that some NKP offsets were in service on the former Interstate in raw coal service as late as the 80s.

Does anyone have any documentation of their use around that time?

Thanks,
Marcus

I can tell you their final assignment was hauling clay in Illinois but that's a good 8 years after your modeling period.

Hallett's gravel pits are in Iowa. Can't say where their customers were...

According to Dow's N&W coal car book, there were still 111 of class H44 in service in 1990. This figure dropped to 71 in 1991, 70 in 1992, 36 in 1993 and 8 were still in service as of the publication of the book (1998)

There is a photo of one in coal service circa 1987 (in N&W hambrger) in the same book. It is likely that they stayed in coal service into the early 90s.

There are a few pictures of the NKP 3 bays on Fallen flags in the late 80's. There is even a two bay with MW painted on in still in service in 86.
If the cars where built in 64 they realy didn't last that long. IIRC the N&W started geting 90T cars in 63 so these where already out of date when built.

Needless to say since I am doing the NKP N&W transition I need these cars and the WLE too.

Your layouts nice, but it needs more Conrail !
