It looks wonderful, but I wouldn't let my locos get caught dead anywhere near steel wool. IMHO, over time the wool will deteriorate, and pieces of it will find a way to get into motor magnets. There is a good reason why steel wool had gone out of favor fifty years ago... it's just a problem nobody needs especially with nonmetallic fiber available... Just sayin' :|

I shudder at the thought of using steel wool anywhere near a model railroad.

After all of the concerned responses I will keep an eye on it. It's not near the track, and it's painted. I will do a few run-bys and keep a sharp eye. I shall report back. Thanks men.

Along the line of the steel wool, a friend of mine was using spent dryer sheets, coated with matte medium and acrylic paint, to build up the terrain on parts of a little shelf layout he was working on.  I wonder if they could also be used in a similar application like your using steel wool?

Getting back to the engine house project.....no photos just yet. I did take these lately.......

No problems so far with the steel wool. I thoroughly vacuumed the right of way....I've run many engines back and forth thru here and examined each right away. I think it's far enough away fro the track, painted and covered with scenery materials, so I think I'll be OK. If it turns out I'm wrong, I will post my surrender....

Started back on the engine house.....I used 0.080 styrene for the walls, thought it would be good and sturdy for such a length. I cut the first window opening, but the cutting, trimming and sizing probed to be tedious, it's much easier in thin stock.

I figured I wouldn't get the spacing and distance from the bottom uniform, so I did some rethinking.....
I used 0.040 styrene and pieced it together.....

...on a 0.040 styrene inner wall, the openings are cut more than big enough to easily fit the windows, no accuracy required....

I haven't been doing much on the railroad the last few months...last week I went in the train room to put something on the workbench.  I didn't turn the light and when I got to the bench, I noticed the daylight coming thru the window and took these photos....
