I'm not sure about you, but I hate it when I get excited to work on my layout only to have my inspiration fizzle out at the last minute.  I will say that you have a great start on the engine facility.  Based on the original photo you posted, this is looking pretty spot on.

Looking forward to further updates!

I really enjoy your structures and seeing your process. I'm working on a paper mill to add to my layout and this thread was inspiring! Great work!

Thank you Jeff. Go see the Idaho belt thread (basement calling)....his paper mill structures put mine to shame.

Im not sure if I'm on to something, but I've tried something new. Steel wool scenery....

Grade #0000

Stretched thin....

Spray painted brown and Sprinkled with ground foam.....

The foliage at far left is also steel wool

I'm happy with the results. The steel wool is much, much less expensive than the woodland scenic polyfibre

I like how it looks, but steel wool is also much, much more trouble for small electric motors than polyfibre. I'd be very, very, very, very, careful where you place it on the layout.

I placed the steel wool on the embankment for the photo....I do the painting and ground foam on the bench in my woodshop, then pace it on the layout. Vacuum the nearby track....I don't see bit of s/w being an issue. You did ,are be think about it tho...I'll pay even more attention to it.

Steel wool is a very old method for scenery. There was a time when most trees were made with it (pre-lichen). Fell out of style in the fifties.

While it's not as inexpensive as steel wool, Micromark's polyfiber is less costly than Woodland Scenic's:

Yeah... I'll echo the comments and say that I would never use steel wool around any magnet. :scared: Although I agree the result is pretty nice !
