Bachmann steam decoders

I have a number of recent Bachmann DCC equipped steam locomotives, most of which are getting rebuilt and paired with different tenders and Tsunami or Loksound decoders. As a result, I will have a number of  " spare" Bachmann decoders I'd like to sell, trade, or more likely, use in non-sound equipped 1st generation A unit diesels (I use the B units for sound).
So my question is this: has anyone tried to use these decoders in a hard wired configuration in other locos, and if so can they be used without the board? I don't just want to throw them out, but they may be more trouble then they are worth...
Thanks, Otto K.

The decoders that are a seprate decoder soldered to the board in the tender work just fine. I use them in some older steamers as a quick fix for DCC until I get around to buying better decoders for them. Make sure to mark the wires as you unsolder them because I have found the coding of the wires to be different from batch to batch. I cut a thin strip of masking tape and make wire tags (1-8) to mark the wires when removing them.
