How to "TT" a Atlas-Kato GP 9 fuel tank....."duh"

So; now that I'm back at the bench I want to make a CPR GP 9 with air tanks on the roof (ok; they had DB's on their TT's... go figure...). They used these in British Columbia for both freight and passenger assignments... I have a an undec Atlas-Kato GP9 w/ DB's and all the parts (including the MT pilot conversion kit... yep; it's an old one... lucky I'm still DC).... except the #$@$#@ fuel tank... and the Atlas made GP9 TT tank doesn't fit....

I'm looking at modifying the existing tanks by "filling in" the air tank end and smoothing/shaping it.....

Any a@@hat input/ideas/random throughts and or general abuse is requested............

Modeling the CPR is such fun................
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Is it one of the KAto made ones with the RS-3 mechanism under it?

Since you included the above phrase ...the Atlas/Kato GP7/Gp9 was one of the worst renditions of a loco in N scale - ever! The hood was stretched a few feet to fit over the A/K RS3 mech, and the resulting truck centers (which are closer together than on a Geep) give it a wonderful fore and aft overhang. Dump it on Ebay.

Ok; just bought a GP9 body, w/ DB's complete with all the fixin's on E Bay and will salvage a newer GP7 frame and motor I have alying around.... as for the existing "unit"... it might just find it's way onto the Bay or I might just shove it under a dead RS 3 I have............................@$#@$!@ :RUEffinKiddingMe:

The original Atlas/Kato frame was designed for their RS-3 and repurposed for the GPs, so putting it under an RS-3 would be ideal.  For most roads you'd need Alco trucks as well, but if you have a dead RS, the truck frames should still be good, even if the gears aren't.  The Alco and EMD truck frames were also interchangeable on those.

Ah, the joys of Canadian modelling.  everything is a little different...

For the life of me, I have no idea what you mean by "TT."   :ashat:

Let's get a positive ID on which chassis you're talking about here.

They are very much not all the same.   I'm puzzled on why the Atlas long tank won't fit unless you've either got the RS3 chassis with the length problem, or if the "Atlas Kato" chassis is one of the ones stolen from a GP30/35 (which were excellent runners)

I am pretty sure since Pud mentioned it had open pilots, and had to have the pilot conversion from MT it is the old RS mechanism under the GP body, all Atlas production with the correct length mechanism, is to my knowledge, going to have a solid pilot/walkway assembly. If I recall correctly when they redid the mechanism it was the first, or one of the first, locos from China and included rapido couplers which were the quick switch to 1015's.

The TT fuel tank should fit any of the China mechanisms.

It's the Kato Japan version and it is the RS 3 frame and the "oh my heavens the pilots are missing" front.... It, and it's equally dysfunctional, yet also NIB GP 7 sister (yep, Pud bought two way back when....) will most likely find their way to another home via either and auction site or divine intervention......

Wow - I would love to see a photo of an EMD GP7 or 9 with dynamic brakes and roof-mounted air tanks.  Could it be that the tanks were mounted astride the radiator cooling fans rather than the DB equipment?  The intense heat from the resistor grid would tend to increase the pressure in the air reservoirs - maybe a lot?
