Patching a locomotive

I have several custom painted locomotives returning to me soon and was curious what is the best way to simulate patching. These are custom painted so no prototype exists, the locos are painted Vermont red. I was thinking I could use some black or yellow decal trim to simulate the back of the batch with some black numbers or something like that.

John,
I would use one of Microscales trim film decals to make a patch. A lot of
the railroads would just use a color that was close to the existing color to
cover over what was there and re-stencil then. All you would need to do
is to cut a piece too the size you wanted and apply.
Microscale has a maroon that would do nice on this color. It is stock # TF18

Oh by the way, I did get your email and will get back to you on that question.

Thanks Jon, I'll look for the microscale trim that you mentioned.

You may also be interested in the stencil-style number sets, like the 60-1285, 60-1302, or 160-1303.
