What did you use to paint it?

There is some minor horizontal striping that comes through in your low horizon, I would try to work on smoothing that.  I prefer to use an airbrush with diluted paint.

I painted it with a small roller,using latex paint

Looks pretty damn good to me, especially for a first try.

It's hard to tell from your photos, but perhaps a bit more blending of the blues and whites -- so you have a more gradual gradient -- might be a small improvement.

I agree, it does look good, but it is unusual to have strong horizontal elements in the sky with that kind of regularity.  If you could break it up with a bit of lightly applied white might be what you are looking for?

I've found that a small amount (really small!) of Payne's gray, mixed with white, gives a nice bluey darker color that is very good for cloud shadows.  I use the liquid Golden paints for this as they are easy to mix and air brush, but any type of paint would work.

I think in general it works pretty well.   Aside from the sky itself, can you change the lighting to reduce the effect of the model shadows on the backdrop?   That I think would increase the effectiveness.

When the back is out of focus, I think it looks awesome.  Like your first image -- spot on.  Right up there with some of the best I've seen.  But when the backdrop is in focus, you start to see some of the striations a bit more than one would expect to see.  A hair more of smoothness to the gradient and you'd have it absolutely perfect, IMHO.

    Well, looks super good to me as well !
Theres many different looks to the sky, lots of ways to do it with either an airbrush, sponge or brush.
Also quite a few shades of colors as well.

Tom is correct; I don't mind the banding. In addition, the focus should be on the mill and your backdrop doesn't overpower the scene - well done!

+4 Flagler!  I think it looks like a front rolling in from the distance.  Classic view, really nice.  Saw that alot on my trip to Wyoming.
