Laser Cutter for Hire, $5/sheet

Monster Modelworks offers to laser-cut anything you can fit on a 12"x4" sheet for $5:

(You supply the vector art; having them digitize a drawing costs extra.)

I spotted an ad for this in the August MRH (http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com); I have no information beyond what's on the web site.

Oh, I could very easily make them wish they'd never made that offer. I've done some drawings half the size of their sheet that take 4-6 hours to burn. Imagine them opening my file and waiting 10 hours for the laser to finish? That would be a hard-earned $5!

The thing is, a 12" x 4" sheet of what? I'm guessing laserboard. They need to supply much more information on their web page before the offer makes any sense.

Yeah I've had stuff that size cost around $70 to burn. I believe their bricksheets are balsa and therefore cut quicker.

They've got video of their laser at work, it's definitely much quicker (or quicker with their material) than something that could possibly allow for a burn-time measured in so many hours.

I've got most of their line-up purchased.  It's pretty impressive stuff -- especially when buying it at less than half price.  Pretty expensive normally.  And they just announced yesterday that they'll start offering it in 0.015" thickness which will be nice as a laminate.

Here's their old worn brick:

Hey Mark,
that's a cool shot - and the date on the penny makes it even cooler.

The offer is to cut door/window openings in one of their brick sheets.  It's not to cut anything you want on a blank canvas.

Their brick is basswood.

If I may ask, what's the source for that information? Because that's certainly not what the example image (a pile of components for making a clock) on the linked page implies...

The $5 offer is listed under their brick sheet page and references a 12x4 inch sheet, which is the same as their brick sheets. So while it isn't explicitly stated, I think this is what they intend. http://monstermodelworks.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=15

They do have a separate laser cutting and engraving section that doesn't mention the $5 deal, or any prices for that matter.

I agree that the illustration is misleading, but it makes more sense that this is an add-on to the purchase of their brick sheet. I haven't done this yet, but it seems like a great deal for a building with many openings. I like the looks of their brick sheets but haven't had a chance to try them yet.

Best wishes, Dave
If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
