The rest of the fleet starts to get it's 1920 correct lettering.

Top is a K-1-B 2-6-0
Middle is a G-3 4-6-0
Bottom is an I-2 4-6-2

At least in my mind....




Do you own the spectrum 2-8-0 as well? Does it have the same sized drivers as the 2-6-0 and 4-6-0?

I was just testing the pulling power of my two steam locomotives, a Bachmann Berkshire and a cosmetically altered Bmann 2-8-0. They both pulled 31 cars and a caboose! 31 cars fills my mainline, but it is nice to know these models have ample pulling power.

To keep this thread alive, here's a shot of a MORE/LIK de-skirted GS-2 on UP territory, leaning into the curve at Echo.  This is one of the finest detailed and best running pure stock N-scale brass engines I've ever seen.

Time to decide whether to convert her to DCC and sound, or wait for the Kato Greyhound and sell her. She started out with the light gray striping, but I retettered and restriped her, one letter at a time... Nice machine, shown here below Devore, westbound on the wrong track  8)

I've got this model too, and I'm keeping it.  The Kato FEF-3 isn't correct for TT Grey except as the 8444/844 during post 1960 excursion service.  The giveaway is the lack of a Worthington SA feedwater heater on the brass model...which is 1947 perfect..and very obvious.

The 844 had both light gray and yellow striping and lettering in TTG.  The light gray striping was later and all TTG engines got repainted to it in their last TTG paint job before being returned to basic black sometime in the early 50's.

Fact is, there is a possibility that one or two...or three FEF-3's may have been repainted TTG...with light gray lettering and striping after they'd been equipped with the Worthington SA feedwater heater...but, I haven't fond any photo evidence of it yet...but not the 844.

Here's mine as compared length-wise to Big Boy and Challenger...

The three UP's are awesome, no doubt. Very nice collection. However, being an SP family man, I think the GS-2 outshines the the UP's. Don't know if the difference is the manufacturer and details or the very nice close up of her leaning into the curve, very nice picture. Are the MORE/LIK locos still being made ?

I've had a lot of brass N-scale over the years, but the MORE/LIK engines are THE best I've seen, both operationally and detail-wise.  Unfortunately, they're not being made any more.  This one's for sale in "Trading Post".

As for my "collection"...lol...I buy the engines to run on my layout, so I have half a dozen Big Boys, eight Challengers, three FEF-3's and two FEF-2's, four USRA Light Mikes, and two UP 2-8-0's with Vandy tenders.  To run both passenger and freight trains in a single prototypical day, I'll need at least another ten Big Boys and a dozen Challengers...and another three FEF-3's.  I'll need to kitbash three UP TTT's also...and that's just the UP stuff. 

Lots of SP steam in my era also, but my son needs the money, so the MORE/LIK de-skirted GS-2 is his, and he's having me sell it for him...and I really hate to see it go.

I like UP and SP since they both ran into Ogden, and I really like the way SP steam looks in my 1947 through 1956 era.  The GS's and MT's are really beautiful engines.  BUT, in my mind, the most beautiful and fast passenger engine is the UP FEF-2/3...massive, modern, graceful and fast.  Arguably the best of fast steam IMO!

This is my new SP overnight set, and yes the coach on the back was correct.  It was too fast for cabooses.  They did bring out a caboose with high speed trucks later to use with the diesels on this train.

I was struck by how fast that train appears to be moving.    I clocked it by counting 31 40' freight cars zipping by in 12 seconds,
to be about 70 mph, and allowing for some extra space between the cars, let's call it 75 mph.

That does sound reasonable for a "fast freight".
But it looks like it's going a lot faster than that.

The NPBH crews are having a 'union' meeting. Why? Well the new Yellowstone ( yet to be modified to match the NP Z-5,) has been in sound and pulling trials. It may result in fewer crews needed! During testing she pulled 28 cars plus shack up the 5.3% grade out of the yard!

Hey James.

For the GS-4's -- with 80" drivers they had a top speed of 110 MPH.

Ok how did you get your Cab-Forward to pace with your GS-4? I've tried and I can't get any speed out of the Cab-Forward.

Hi Nick, 

To be fair the GS4 and Cab forward where not mine so I am only guessing. They belong to 'Bobthebear' who is also on this forum.  The Cab forward has an aftermarket sound decoder installed, the GS4 has a regular decoder.  The GS4 is a bit quicker but that was a heavy train and the GS4 was pushing more than the Cab forward was pulling I think.  But given the traction of the Kato GS4 it wasn't slipping much so they balanced out.  The other GS4, the war baby, was slower than the Cab Forward and together ran much slower. 

I'll find out what make decoder was in the Cab Forward.
