New from Walthers in N!

Speaking of Walthers,  a 3 pack of the ballast cars (the old clunky car, not the difco) sold for $77 on Ebay in UP.

If Walthers put as much effort updating the tooling for their N scale cars and engines that they did in HO, they would be some of the best cars out there.

PD5150? That would look pretty good  with an etched roofwalk, and ladders that were not 10" thick. Same goes with the ballast hoppers. The body is good, but the details are clunky.

There are other cars, like their PS2 covered hopper that were pretty nice even by today's standards. If they upgraded that car with 100T trucks, etched or Delern end details and better paint, it would be right up there with the ER and MTL versions.

The NE cab would not need a whole lot to make better either. Propert trucks, lower height, window glass and maybe include a lighting kit for $25 total.

They also did i ribbed side version of the NACC box. Again, ladders and steps are clunkier than Athearn, but if those were cleaned up, than this would not be a bad car.

I wish I had enough money to buy out Walthers N line and do it right.

There was one in Milwaukee colours that went higher than that, I think. Over $80.00

I do know for myself, and several other modellers, what we would really, really like to see are new production runs of the Life-Like Erie-Builts and Alco FA units.

I wonder would it generate results to send monthly, or weekly, or daily, or even hourly messages to Walthers on the website asking when the N scale is coming?

I have to add another sentiment... I agree in this respect that almost anything would be better than what Walthers is doing currently. The former LL locomotives -- SW9s, Erie's, C-Liners, FAs and PAs all need to be re-run, again, as well as a nice variety of rolling stock such as the old ballast hoppers and snowplows.

I often hope that maybe they read these threads and take notice.

I'd like to see Walthers come out with some new Cornerstone structures, also.

Walthers is re-releasing the SW9's.

Originally scheduled for January of this year, they were pushed back to January of next year.  Now I guess they'll be coming in October.

So long as the economy is still in the crapper, they won't be investing in any tooling to make anything new.

The thing about Walthers, and it gives me a chuckle, is they seem to release just enough new N scale product each year, so they have something to put on the cover of their catalogs.

If it wasn't for their catalog, I seriously doubt they would be giving N anything.

Regarding the economy being in the tank, Atlas, Bachmann, FVM, BLMA, Kato etc., have found it possible to come out with new product, Walthers isn't a new company, regarding model trains, I have to echo comments I've read elsewhere on various N scale forums, it's time for Walthers to do something with the former LifeLike line, or sell it to someone that will.

They've been upgrading their N sale locomotives to include DCC support and re-releasing them at the rate of about one a year (GP20 last year, GP60 this year, SW9 next year). So, Eries by 2020?

The reason the SW9 has been put off again is most likely that pre-orders are pretty low. Many dealers are VERY wary of ordering Walthers Loco's.......and to a certain extant other products is that the history has been that 6 months or a year after the fact they offer them on sale at steeply discounted prices. While they do protect the dealer margins and allow us to offer the same discounts if a dealer still has the same product on the shelf, he just got undercut. All in all itdoesn't mean much to you guys because many will wait in the expectation of better pricing. It does lead to the attitude of disappointing N scale sales at Walthers and an official policy of leaving N scalers to whither on the vine.

limited understanding is that Walthers will come through and allow dealers to 'restock' or place new orders at the discount price/margin.  The original stock is not price protected and the stocking dealer has to eat the difference.  A this for the privelidge of having Walthers product on the shelf to let customers fondle and molest the model while they wait for the inevitable sale to come...
