Weekend Update 7/22/12

Ive been working on several projects this week. The first is wiring up feeders, getting a holder for my NCE throttle and finally working on some fuel tanks for my engine facility ala M.C. Fujiwara of course Im not done. Id like to put the tanks on a base, I need to add piping to the pump house and a retaining wall around the larger tank. I also need to add walkways and safety gear to the tanks and maybe some artwork to the tanks.

Wife's job took us out to the eastern part of the state and I tooled around for a day and visited a few places. Jarrett was first up with it's former Virginian crossing of the ACL. The Virginian roadbed is used there for a short run to a wood chip plant. There is still a Virginian building there that is used by CSX now.




Next place down the line was Emporia, VA. There is an old crossing there that is currently owned by NS. It is not used much. It has a really neat setup for the rails. Never seen it this way before.






Next town was Weldon. Much to my surprise it is a wonderful railroad town. Lots of neat stuff going on there. There are some old photos on a historical marker that show the old two level Union station that the SCL and ACL shared.





Last was Roanoke Rapids and I caught CSX switching the oldest kraft paper plant in the country.
Notice the double truck dump in the first picture.

which includes a link to his pbase folder that shows photographs of how he made a pair of Horribly Oversized models of the CRS-20 out of Atlas RS-11s and a Kaslo Shops RS-18 conversion kit.  The latter doesn't exist in our Normal scale but the photos should give you some ideas.

LOTS of work done in the layout building this week, still primarily demolition, although I've started to wire the new electrical panel. Better yet, received two bona fide quotes on the new HVAC, one more to go before pulling the trigger.

There have already been four dumpster loads previous to this.

Thanks for the tip.  I have collected hundreds of photos, but that post has some critical measurements which will be a big help.  Now..where did I put that hacksaw?

Only thing I did was to take my new Exact Rail waffle cars down to the basement to check out their running qualities.  And I dropped one car right down the steps.  Luckily the car did not get broken but 2 of the wheels popped out.  Found the one and am still looking for the other.  Stupid me.

No, I've never seen a crossing made like that either.  I've heard of them, but had never seen so much as a picture.  It makes sense, though, if one track is heavily used and the other sees little or no traffic, and slow traffic at that.

Earlier this summer, I went on a tubing trip that was in some state park over in northeastern Tennessee (I wish I could remember exactly where).  When we got there, I was very pleasantly surprised to find this structure preserved for posterity!



The bridge extends across the river (on the right) into the actual mine.  You can now walk across this and get some unique angles.





On the bridge was a mine cart too.

Also, this week I finished the mold for a Chessie System rock pilot master I made.  This is the first time I've really done a two-part mold, and I'd say it turned out well.  I'll be needing plenty of these, so I've been popping out as many as I can.  They were on practically every Chessie locomotive after all!
