Also on my list is a security/parking lot floodlight, offered in two types: mercury (cool white) and sodium (warm white with some orange filtering to get the right color).
PLEASE!!! just PLEASE!!!

David,
Now that this thread has totally gone off on a tangent, for the sodium lights, instead of orange-tinting a warm white LED, wouldn't it  make more sense to just use a soft orange LED?

The real low-pressure sodium lamps (amber lamps, often used for outdoor nighttime illumination) produce a virtually monochromatic light averaging a 589.3 nm wavelength.

Why not just  use an LED which emits the same wavelength light?  No Tinting - no guessing.  Looking at Digikey catalog, I found bunches of 0603 size LEDs which emit 590nm light.  Here are couple of examples (at different Millicandela Rating):
800mcd http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/APTD1608SYC%2FJ3/754-1543-1-ND/2514672
480mcd http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/APTD1608SYCK/754-1544-1-ND/2514677
150mcd http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/APT1608SYCK/754-1124-1-ND/1747841
There is lots more to choose from.

Now if you want to model a high-pressure sodium lamp then you are probably better off tinting a white LED.

I tend to see more high-pressure lamps in use; I perceive a trend to move away from low-pressure to high, so I'd want to start with a warm white and filter it to get that strange pinkish-yellow color.

The Oakways are not demonstators. They were build specifically as a fleet of 100 units that BN purchased power output from on an hourly basis. See the link. It was a rather novel concept in railroading that didn't really catch on though BN also got 100 LMX B39-8's on the same type of deal.

Just a point of order, streetlights of that type, by design, are meant to light the street and not everything surrounding them.  People don't usually like them shining in their windows at night so there are specific lighting patterns and cutoffs that are employed.

Golly.  Then the little people in my little houses must really hate the big light in the alley!

Jeebus, it's a special effect with a bit of theatrical embellishment...  Some people need to get a hobby!
