Here's another... like yours, showing the crew.  Each car had it's own care taker with a SMALL cabin.  Not the job I'd want on a hot humid summer....

I didn't realise they actually contained onboard crew quarters. It makes sense but can't be the most enjoyable of rides.

Interesting how the poultry compartments are top and side vented, but the people compartment is not. On a hot day, that must have been a joy to ride

Jeff, you're correct, it's brass, by Overland, about '85. Custom painted, Champ decals.
Champ is of course out of business now.

It was in the economic interests of the shipper and the railraod to ensure the chickens arrived at their destination (end of the line for the chickens, one assumes) in good condition, or at least alive. Probably not as much regard for the chicken rangler in the 'cabin'...

Yes the Overland brass HO version set my target for what I'm doing in N scale.  It has MUCH more details than the American N Brass 1970's N scale version.

I've much of the super structure design done, but admit it is a slow go at the moment, while working out the optimal screening (true N scale chicken mesh is outside the capabilities of PE shops, and while we can make it fine, it risks increased fret failures as well as possibly too delicate for handling.)  My design has this screening will be on a separate part, (screening with its horizontal frame) sandwiched between the braces of superstructure just like in the prototype.  So I knew I'd have a bit more time to tweet the screen design after I got my frame design is done. 

But also, as I plan to have sound optionally available, I've been sidetracked designing a PCB that will fit in the cubby and along roof, with a sugar cube speaker and integrated baffle, before I finalize the frame design.  (To be clear, I'm not yet sure this will be technically or economically feasible, but it is looking promising as I've already reduced my prototype PCB to 1/2 the size of the massive "end to end" PCB of the BLI N scale stock car w/ sound, by using even smaller SMD components.)   

@JMaurer1  Still no ETA or price.  Basically, for pricing of kits, I'm shooting to "re-coop" for the first run production.

Here is an end view of the Overland HO version...

Note the end and roof detail, which included the stateroom smokestack, as well as the roof doors, which I understand allowed access to a water tank located above the stateroom.  The box below the cubbie was a bin for grain.

And while I thought (think?) the BLI moo sounds are hokey, a fowl cacklephony coming out of a well done palace poutry car might actually be entertaining. I don't know why I make that totally subjective distinction, other than the fond memories I have of my grandparents and the chickens in their back yard...
And how does one model chickens in N scale?

You could save a lot on wire mesh and get better sound if you make it with solid sides- I have that on very good authority.

And how does one model chickens in N scale?

Both Langley Models and Neal's N-gauging make chickens.  And somebody on shapeways does pigeons, so I would think they could do chickens, if they don't already.  Of course, at what is probably $1 each or more (in packs of 5 or 10), it would be pricey to fill up a car.  It does bother me that in the modern day, an N scale detail may cost more than the real one did when I was 25.
