Viewing member's profile
« on: May 12, 2012, 12:35:59 PM »
Being an ex-Atlas forum member I was used to be able to view individual members' profiles. Now I just tried to view Atlas Paul's profile (to see what other messages he's been posting here), but instead of his profile I get "You are not allowed to access this section".   Is this another one of those Railwire privileges I have to earn or graduate to or will I never be allowed to view other member's profile?

I can't see anything either.  Might be you need to demonstrate sufficient  :ashat: contributions.

The feature is to ensure no one can sign up and spam the other members.  You can view profiles at 50 or so posts.

I can turn this off if you want emails from new member "penis enlargement pills"

Tom -
Are you certain about that?  I still cannot and believe others with many, many posts have commented on it previously.

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Viewing member's profile - take 2
I tried to respond to the original thread wit the same subject line but for some reason I cannot post my reply (even though the thread is not locked and I can freely post responses to other threads in the Administrative forum). Weird stuff is going on here...

Is there a possibility that this useful feature could be turned back on?  Even Tom himself (in recent reply to my other thread https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=26180.0 ) thought that this feature was still enabled, but now I have over 50 posts and I'm still not allowed to view the profiles.  I found that function very useful when searching the forum for what others have done (modeling-wise or otherwise).  Like I said, in this particular example I was curious what Atlas Paul has been posting here.

While I don't know about here, I know that on the Atlas forum the user profile did not provide any useful info to be able to either contact user directly or to SPAM them somehow.  It allowed PM'ing or emailing the user but did not show their email address.  Could you at least allow viewing user's profile and only show info about that user's posts? This forum has so many safeguards on it already, I can't believe that someone who was a spammer pretending to be a legitimate user wouldn't be easily discovered after 50 posts.

I appreciate that the admins here are looking out for us but are you possibly getting a bit too cautious here?  :RUEffinKiddingMe: Honestly, the only true way to protect yourself is to disable the network connection on your, power it off and take away the power cord.

EDIT: forgot to add a smiley at the end...  ;)

It used to be 50 posts to protect your groin and any desire to enlarge it. It was then turned to full off not longer after that.

It is currently in discussion at the Admin Congressional Hearings for enabling it for those who have reached "crew" AKA 50 posts.
Committee will let everyone know when a decision has been made.

If you're "obsessively" paranoid, you're doing it wrong. Only when it becomes second nature--when you can do it without even thinking--have you truly mastered the art.  :scared:  8)

I don't know if this is related, but I cannot change my profile settings.

I signed up in 2010 but did not become active (and make my first post) until about a week ago. I want to modify my signature but I just have a read-only summary under my "Profile" menu item.

Steve,
as a newbie I had the same question last week.  You need 25 posts to be able to change your profile. See https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=25208.0 .

We need to make sure that any changes make sense for us. Just because something worked at Atlas, doesn't mean it will here. We don't want to end up like Atlas with account issues. ... we only have $75 to run the forum with - not $75000 :)

John & Peteski, No worries! You see I signed up back in 2010 and set my signature then. I've only just become active and couldn't figure out where I'd set my signature! Must have been at signup. Anyway, this one will help we get towards the magic number so I can add my website into my signature.

John,
I realize that here I'm only a guest of Tom and his minions: the moderators.  :) I'm not trying to argue.  I just presented my reasonings and it appears that Tom didn't even realize that this feature was disabled and Ian took my request into further consideration.

While I have no idea what kind of information is presented on this forum under user's profiles, the other forums I frequent do not display any direct contact info about members (such as email address).  I don't know how having access to this limited info be useful to spammers who harvest info about users (after not being discovered after posting 50 messages).  I  find having access to lists of posts by specific members very useful feature.  Maybe you guys could possibly enable viewing user's profiles and just give us the ability to list of that member's posts (and the date they joined the forum - another priece of info I find useful in determining someones modeling credibility).

At this point I'll be patiently awaiting the outcome of the Admin Congressional Hearings.  :|
