Has Ayone Seen These Fuel Tanks In N Scale?
« on: May 09, 2012, 01:46:00 AM »

I am considering undertaking a model of oufit fuel supply car PGE 991104, which was a Pacific Great Eastern 41 foot flat car with six horizontal fuel tanks mounted on board:

I am wondering if anyone has seen anything offered in N Scale close to these.  I estimate the length of the tanks to be about ten feet but I am unsure of the diameter.

Any help appreciated,

I haven't seen anything similar to those tanks offered in N scale.

But this is somethign you should be able to easily scratch build from styrene tubing (or acrylic rods) and other styrene bits.  If you can cast your own resin parts, you can make the ends as a casting or even master just one tank then make a mold and cast all six that way.

Maybe something could be made to work out of this Imex product

The others lok a little big for that flat car.

Someone on eBay is selling these old resin castings that look like they'd be at least a good starting point.

And at $1.95 "buy-it-now" for a pair of them, they certainly could be worth a shot.  Maybe use a little piece of bent piano wire for that breather pipe?

Those Cal Freight Propane tanks look about the right size - everything else suggested appears to be too big.  The IMEX propane tanks would do in a pinch, but I think they are too long by a scale foot or two.

Couldn't these easily be nicked out of a sprue for little or no cost?  Cut to length, a little rubby rub with sanding paper on the ends, and poof!.  Add a few bits of wire for the vents, slap on some yellow paint, and you're off to the races.

This obsession with buying things continues to confound me.

That's because you're the only guy left with a big enough collection of various sized sprues from which to make that happen.

Duh!

I like the scratch building idea but the problem is making a dozen tanks EXACTLY the same.  It would be worth the effort to make one great model and cast it.

What scale kits are you assembling with 3/8" diameter sprues?

Doesn't look like that scales out to 3/8"...  and if it is, spend $3 on some evergreen and have enough material to make 25 of them.

If they're 1/4 or 5/16, use a pen barrel.  Cripes, must everything be spoon fed?

I'm with you, Lee, and not only because I don't have two pennies to rub together.  I just assumed he wanted an RTR solution.  Pen barrel is a good idea.  Piano wire and/or guitar strings make for quick and easy pipe.  And some scrap bits of a bread bag clip can easily make the base.  Oh, and the clips from the big bags of oranges or potatoes not only have more material, but they're thicker, too.  This would also make a good cap for each end of the pen barrel (just enough material to sand it to a nice convex surface).

Might want to check out what they have in other scales also.  And don't forget that there is a lot of tanks of various sizes in various military model scales.  I've used left over parts from these for tanks and other things.

Thank you all - I know I can build them out of styrene tube but I was curious to know if there was anything close on the market.
