I'd seal the ducts too.

That might be a challenge. We need the heat through the night. I can possibly cover two or three of the more difficult ones to get to this afternoon, then save the remainder for just before the crew arrives. Obviously the system will be shut off while this is going on, and I have a half-dozen filters in the stash for the restart.

Already been discussed with the crew. I'm more concerned with the studio.

Hang plastic sheeting over the openings.  You won't completely stop that dust from spreading to the studio, but this will help minimize its mess.  I don't envy you the clean up.

That specific problem was discussed with the foreman. I emphasized with him that one of the reasons the temporary wall was there was dust control, but he insisted it be removed so he could finish his work. The inference was that he still wasn't going to allow me to have any part in the finishing, as I was wanting to have the rest of the room done all the way through sanding, then Robyn and I would handle the little that was left around that opening. He said he would handle the plastic curtains to shield that area, but I have my reservations and will stop work if it comes to that.

Robyn was hoping he would mostly sponge the finish (her usual technique), but it apparently is too time-consuming for pros. :|

I like sponging the drywall mud, too, but, in the professional's defense, that would take a huuuuuuuuuge amount of time to sponge your space.

[sigh]

I'm glad you guys convinced me to cover everything. Sanding is done, in just a little over an hour. The dust was nicely contained until they started sweeping - it's a bloomin' fog in there right now. [Dammit, guys... stop pounding the brooms on the floor!] We'll give it a couple or three hours to settle, then I'll have to vacuum (I have the special filter bags). Then vacuum again. And again.

What a mess.

Now my work resumes. Lots to do.

Painting a strip around the top in prep for hanging the wall channel for the ceiling grid. Then channel.

After the channel is up we need to shuffle the piles o' stuff again so I can finish the lighting electrics and grid supports. Then grid. While I'm messing with that, Robyn will be painting the walls. There are a lot of other tasks mixed in there, some taking several days, but they're mostly finish issues (sanding and sealing the floor, for instance).

Oooo... which reminds me, I need to get the troffer lights ordered. If I order them today or tomorrow, lead time will be just about right.

Best way to keep the sweeping dust down is to buy a bag of floor sweeping compound . Toss it out over the floor THEN sweep everything up . As long as you use enough of it , it will really keep the dust down . http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=129078-531-HDSWEEP50&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=3697666&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1

Interesting to know. The first pass at vacuuming seemed to help a lot, enough that the heat is back on.

Even if I had the sweeping compound for them to use, I doubt they would take the time to mess with it (even if just a few extra seconds). These guys weren't really into "clean", they were wholly concentrated on getting in and getting out in as little time as possible. It's going to take a while to scrub the plaster drips off the floor... and you should see the gigantic mess they made out of the lift. We were wondering out loud tonight if we would have been time ahead to mud it ourselves, rather than pay for the mud work and spend a similar amount of time or more cleaning up after them. We know it's not a toss-up at all, but it seems like they left us with a big chore. :|

Oh yea , the plaster drips :( . For those get a long handled floor scraper and scrape around the outside of the room before you use the mop . It will make things a lot easier . I used to do a lot of construction site clean up , and my boss was picky . ( also he was a very nice person to work for ! )

Every time I hire a contractor, they "gift" me two or three more projects.  My wife is po'ed that all the projects are taking longer, but I won't let them in the house anymore.

Robyn's already forgotten this week's lesson... or so it seems. Yesterday she started painting the layout room in earnest, actually getting a fair amount done. Over breakfast this morning I get this whine, "I'm sore. Why don't we hire the guys you have painting the basement in the museum? They're really cheap, and you know they do a good job." The previous work they'd done at the museum was excellent. However...

I had to remind her that they were spraying the basement and it was going to take them two hours at worst. She has forbidden me from spraying the layout room, not wanting to deal with the overspray, etc. "They're not going to roller for that kind of money, dear." She backed off her idea. :|
