Aroostook Northern

Alright, after running trains and playing round with track arangements, I finally found one that I think finaly looks right.  This is the main line, less sidings and planned yard.

I have roughed in the river at the bottom, which will move slightly.  On the left will be a four track yard which will start where the railbox boxcar is and end just before the far curve.  on the right will be a passing track with industrial sidings that will begin 9 inches from the end of the curve in the front and end at the far switch down by my powerpack.  There will be wooded hills running the length for a scenic divider.

What do you think?

I'm liking the BAR power. It's funny how you picked that name as I'd once considered modeling an "Aroostook Northern." I even went so far as to draw up paint schemes.

Say, those are pretty sharp.  When I think BAR I think "the sticks" and nothing says sticks more that Aroostook County.

Your track plan really reminds me a lot of my old HCD layout, a heavily modified version of the Carolina Central.  I really enjoyed how the plan came together during construction, especially once I added the adjacent yard-on-a-shelf, which I highly recommend.  The Virginia Central was a lot fun to operate and gave me many hours of enjoyment.  I often miss that layout.

As you can see, the creek, small yard (left side of photo), and passing siding (other side of the HCD) are in approximately the same location as yours.  You won't be disappointed with your plan.

Good luck and have fun!

I would be lying if I said I wasn't heavily influenced by your plan, Dave.  It should be fun.

Thanks!  I'm very flattered.  If you need any information as you lay out the plan, let me know.

It looks like I'll have some time to work on the layout this weekend, so I'll post the results.  I'm rather excited to get some work done!

And I'm excited to see it. I am also working on an HCD layout, just haven't even glued the foam to the door yet. How many tubes of glue did you use to attach the foam to the door?

I haven't yet, but one tube should be sufficient.  I wanted to make sure I was satisfied with the placement of the river before I glued everything in place.

You're right, one tube was more than enough.

Got some time to work on the layout yesterday and got a few things done.  Managed to cut out the river, glue down the foam and mainline cork.  I also installed temporary bridges.  I need to install two more main track switches and all sidings, but i'm running trains!

Thanks for looking.

Well, with the wife and kids out of town for the weekend, I found some time to tinker a bit.

I replaced the double warren truss bridge over the river, put in my switches and laid pretty much all the track.  I'm going to have to play around with the yard side.  Other than the yard lead/pass track I'm not certain how I want the rest laid out.  Right now I have three yard tracks and a run around.  The stub end inside track will be a small diesel servicing area.  I'd like to get a pulpwood loading area somewhere on this side, but I'm not certain how I want that laid out.  The side away from the wall I'm satisified with.  I'm going to put two or three industries on these tracks.  There will be a forrested hill running down the middle as a scenic divider and a town along the right side curve (side by the powerpack.  Anyway, any and all feedback is much appreciated.

Thanks for looking.

That yard looks mighty small . . . but otherwise it's a great effort!

I think I am going to keep the Passing track/yard lead and extend the inside three tracks into longer stub ended yard tracks rather than double ended tracks as they are here.

I think this will give me plenty of capacity for the size of the layout and allow me to build a train in the pass without blocking the main track.  I'll add a service track and small engine house somewhere in the mix as well as a pulpwood loading area...I think.  :)
