Yeah I think it has to be tender drive. And yeah the drivers suck, but compared to what? Looks like the tender trucks are solid (no pivot) It is so short I don't think it matters.

I know I want one. 

Who will be the first to ask how to put MT's on the front...  lol

Motor in the tender, yes, but the tender wheels are not driven. Assuming the photo is of a real model as opposed to some pre-production mock-up, look closely: the tender axles have no gears. I suspect they used the same configuration as Bmann. And when you think about it, that's about the only practical way to power a model with these proportions, and remain affordable.

I think the logic here is that Atlas had little to offer in the Christmas layout market, where Bachmann was cleaning their clock. We should expect some old-timey coaches 'tween now and October, and a boxed set around then.

My un-lettered 4-4-0's came the other Saturday , geez that spoke relief looks to be 1/4th the thickness of what I thought . Has anybody come up with a mod that makes it deeper than a brushed coat of paint ?

I have the painted, but undecorated version. Item #40-000-465. Very nice looking.
I have seen it lettered with old style Microscale decal letters/numbers, hope to do same to mine.
Will head my MTL B&O Civil War train.

I'm currently working on DCC installation writeup (which is destined to become a magazine article).  ;)

I'll post some photos of the models underside. It is tender-motor loco (with drive shaft powering the loco's drivers). Same design as the Bachmann 4-4-0.

Some people use "tender-drive" to describe this type of model. To me tender-drive is a loco which has a motor in the tender which powers the tender wheels. The locomotive itself is a free-rolling dummy being pushed along by the tender (and pickup electricity). Lots of Fleischman models are designed like that.
