Rushing to get things on my list finished before the first train show which is a month away, April 14th. Mostly this consists of getting all the turnout motors and control panels installed. I built the the east and west panels using 1/8 Plexi and a thin aluminum backing sheet. I used my new color laser printer to print out the trackplan, and then it is sandwiched between the two. The LEDs are 3mm, and the push buttons will be tactile momentary switches. The crossing protection and switch lock will use SPST tubular security key switches.

I also started working on building some Rix bridges on the layout. The first one is for Superior Ave. I have the pillars installed, but I still need to level them off and then attach the bridge. I also need to add another section to this bridge as I was lacking basic math skillz when I was trying to figure out how many 50' sections I needed.

I know, I know, but I tried it the other way around, and it just didn't work given the images I had on hand.

Actually, a fair number of us (myself included) would have Larry's hair if we just let it grow out!

Looks great. Are you trying to added a bit of an arch to the bridge? Most people seem to build bridges flat but many that I have seen have an arch to them.

I would agree with Dave Schneider, except that, around here anyway, when those old bridges were not level, the rectangular openings in the guardrails usually remained vertical.  The more arch put into the model will highlight that the guardrail openings are not plumb.

Just my two cents; your opinion may vary,

Ian's bridge passes through the fifth dimension then connects to the other end of this...

 

I'm using the same Rix railings on mine, but only as a compromise.  The bridge through Cumberpatch has those classic 1960's steel railings over the concrete side wall, not a Jersey wall, just a curb and a vertical.  I experimented with simulating that design in the center guard rail with some success, using GMM ladders sandwiched between two strips of Evergreen...



I'd like to see someone come up with a kit that provides the curved brackets at the appropriate intervals which could be assembled with either Evergreen styrene rod or steel piano wire.

The only commercial items in this model are as follows:
White metal doors in the platform vestibule and the south end of the building.
white metal staircase from the platform down to the baggage room (you can't see that unless you're really looking for it)
two Gloor Craft double hung windows on the angled portion of the bay window.  (The wide one on the front is scratched out of Evergreen stock)
A yet to be installed white metal flagpole above the cornice on the north side.
I used a handful of gloor craft windows and doors on the interior work, as well as some odds and ends like stair railings etc.

All of the walls, cornices, platform and roof is scratched out of Evergreen and Plastruct.  The windows and odd doors are being done by Zox on his Silhouette cutter.
