Love it love it love it.

I really need to do that on my next batches to straighten them out a bit better.

@Ed Kapuscinski, straightening the tree trunks is definitely a must-do for you.  I can hide some of the crookedness with foliage, but, obviously, your winter trees don't have that luxury.  I also bury the really crooked ones in the middle of the forest as fill.  They're not as obvious in there.

The next batch of SuperTrees is up.  Hanging on the impromptu clothesline to dry.

Seeing that absolutely terrifies me when I look at how much forest I'm going to have to build...

LOL!

It should.  It's stunning to see how quickly a layout (even one like Dave's) can absorb a dozen trees you've just made... I mean you can just keep adding and adding.

After seeing these trees, I'm going to have to get a box.  My sedum versions just won't do on the outside edges of forests

Trees up!

DFF

Those look terrific Dave!

Don't hesitate to mix in some trees from other suppliers...

I used many super trees.  But I also used many Woodland Scenic tree armatures and finished them off with poly fiber from Micromark– I'd hairspray the poly fiber and then finish off with some kind of fine turf.   Oh I'd hit the armatures with a light coat of gray primer first.

The Woodland scenic armature trees provided a fine contrast.

And then I'd mix in a few Bachmann trees (which aren't bad) and even a few JTT trees.

Again, it's all about contrast.

Really nice work. I model the North East and was thinking of modelling Autumn (Fall) as the colours are just fantastic.
Your work is an inspiration that it can be done right.. Please keep the pics coming.

There's something about the grass to tree transition that just isn't sitting right with me.
I think it might be that I've been doing winter too long.

Dave, got some good reference photos to make me STFU?

@Ed Kapuscinski,

Don't worry, this is still a work in progress.  I agree with you that it still needs something.  So, you're not seeing the final product, especially the trees that were installed last night.  I've got poly-fiber covered with ground foam as underbrush at the tree line (this hasn't been installed under the trees planted last night), but I definitely want some taller foliage under there, to taper the transition from grass to forest.  I plan to use SuperTrees scraps once I get down to the dregs of the SuperTrees box as that intermediate foliage.  I did this on the Virginia Central with some similar Woodland Scenics product, and I think it was successful.

As far as pictures, I'm looking through my ACL, SAL, SCL, and SBD books for guidance, but I'll admit that I'm not so worried about 100% accuracy on this layout anymore (e.g., pine trees), since this layout's days may be numbered.  I keep saying that, but I'm actually enjoying the more realistic goal of completing a HCD layout.  Who knows, maybe I'll rip out the wiring one day and step up to transponding, detection, and signaling.  That would be doable (for me) on a small layout.

For shits and giggles, here's a picture heading east out of Aberdeen on the same road that I'm using as inspiration for the main road through my model of Aberdeen.  These trees are along the lines of the look that I'm going for (yeah, I know, more pines, but there are a good number of deciduous trees in the area, too):
