I finally got the opportunity to buy a piece of foamcore at the suggestion of @M.C. Fujiwara, and what a difference a backdrop makes- even an unpainted piece of foamcore!  I merely clamped it to the fascia.  Perfect!  I'll get some paint on it soon.

Just be careful painting it: it's paper backed, so can warp when you get it wet.

Ooh, good call.  I was going to use spray paint, so I could lay down light, subtle feathery effects.  Hopefully, warping won't happen.

There is some poster board with a sky / cloud background .. you can get it at wal-mart / staples .. get a sheet of that, and mount it on the foam core .. no painting required.

Thanks for the heads-up, John!  That, and some spray adhesive should do it.

Don't paint the board, just add snow all over everything on the corner.

There's a fixture directly over this corner of the layout with old 4' fluorescent bulbs remaining from the previous homeowner.  They only say "Cool White."  The bulbs in most of the other fixtures in the layout room are "Daylight," which have been changed out since we moved in.  What do you recommend for replacement?

Sorry for the late response, go with daylight bulbs, color temp should be in the 5K range. There is a whole argument with bulb types when trying to emulate direct sunlight but going with daylight temp bulbs would be a big help with colors and photography.

I actually just bought a pair to pilot replacing everything in the basement. I've got so many lights at this point that it won't be cheap, but will probably be worth it.

I went with 5K LEDs in my basement. I'd highly recommend 5K "daylight" lighting. It gives truer color, in particular whites.

I use screw in daylight bulbs spaced about 12" apart. They were all CFL's, but now most of them are LED's. I use this strip:http://www.partylights.com/String-Lights-Cords/Medium-Base-String-Lights/48-Medium-Base-Stringer-Black

So I have 20 screw in bulbs around 3 edges of a HCD, with 4 more bulbs going out over the staging yard.

 I got a cheap track light set-up from one of those big hardware stores . The heads were about 12 bucks and the track was maybe 20 bucks. The bulbs are the most expensive part , but I think less than 15 bucks for good 5K daylight bulbs .  I lit the layout room with less power than a 75 watt incandescent bulb ! Don't know why I stuck with the old shoplights for so long ....

Mike, that's what I'm considering doing, too.  There's at least two four-foot fluorescent fixtures over the layout that I inherited with the house.  I've thought about removing them and installing a different lighting system.  I could always put the fluorescent fixtures back up if and when I sell the house.
