Dang! I'd at least come up with a plan for the new layout first.  :scared:

Rod's got the idea. I'll build the room, see what space I have, and then do the final design.  I hope to figure out a preliminary design soon, but I really needed to take down the expansion to get the motivation to move forward.  Besides, I have a lot of work to do on the room.  A lot.  It would be easy to procrastinate and never get around to it.  Now, I'm committed. My wife also didn't freak out when I told her the plan.  So, I took the opportunity to jump in.

Sad, Yes it is. This is one of my favorite threads. But I'm also impressed, sometimes taking that first step is the hardest part. By the time You have the room finished, I'm certain with the assistance of TRW members, You'll have a new plan well in hand. It's great You have the support of your Wife as well, Yesterday, mine gave Me the kick I needed to order a certain Centipede I've always wanted.

Good Luck D. Foxx

Heh, well, technically, the Seaboard Central 2.0 still exists in its original HCD incarnation.  That's not going away until the room is finished and the Seaboard Central 3.0 is underway.

Jaw dropping how quickly this unfolded  :o

Now that you have jumped into the rabbit hole head first and are 110% committed, keep it simple and whatever you do, no spaghetti!!!
No doubt in my mind that this will be one of the great N scale layouts of our time!

Wow...  I have a thread that spans years and well over a hundred pages musing over what I'd do differently...and there must be a dozen or more "false starts" in there.  You decided in a week to change it and you did.  I salute your courage, sir.

Oh, and HAPPY FRICKIN BIRTHDAY, Mr Foxx, Esq.!

As a serial renovator... deconstruction is easy, and fast. It's the rebuilding that gets ya', so best of luck with it all.

I was one of the earlier voices recommending that the layout shoudl reside in a finished room. I'm thrilled to see that not only you took the advice but that you areexecuting this plan so quickly!  My  :ashat: 's off to you Sir!  :D

Dave I know it will be a little while before you get the room ready and start drafting your plan. Just a couple of small ideas that might be worth considering with the new RR. Consider the height of your layout. I am only 5'71/2" tall however my SFRSD is set at 54 inches high. My two main yards are 18 inches and 16 inches. Some of my bench width is only 9"and some even 6" Most of my towns are only 12 inches wide and yet I can fit in all the track I need. Sometime less is best for operations and the look.
Good to see you've made a start it will be a good journey.

No, the original HCD layout, i.e., Seaboard Central 2.0, will not be part of version 3.0.  I'm going "shelf layout" on the next one.

Thanks,

Thanks, Dave, but tearing a layout down, as we all know, goes a lot faster than building one.

I agree, 100%.  This is why I'm keeping the original HCD layout for now.  I fully expect the room to be built as time and finances allow.  This will allow me to take my time developing a new track plan.  I need to do more research and not rush this one.

In my defense, when we bought our house in 2012, my wife would not have been very happy with me building a layout room before we did some other work to the house.  Now, that we have been settled in for almost four years, she's a little more accepting of my plan.

Rod.

Rod,

I have the Seaboard Central 2.0 at just over 52" from the floor.  This works well for me.  I'm 5'9", and I'm usually standing when operating the layout.  This is a nice compromise between nice viewing and being able to see cars buried in the yard.

I look forward to a shelf layout that allows me to fit in the track without having to build a ton of gratuitous scenery.

Thanks,
DFF
