Nicely  played.  If I had that much in Lowe's gift cards I might be dangerous. The guys in plumbing know I've been there after creative stacks of PVC fixtures and parts are on the help desk. I should ask for the security footage to voice over for a step by step on making paper mill details from pipes.

OBTW, Dave,  after reading Lee's post I now get what you meant by vertical or horizontal drywall.  I was thinking cutting into strps ala spine those to do the ceiling, not orientation on the wall.

Thanks to all who have replied!  I appreciate each and every one of your responses.

I've taken a good look at the room.  While I would like to take the path of least resistance, ultimately, for me to be happy, I'm looking at a fully finished room, which means fully studded out and drywalled with a drop ceiling and a finished floor.  The more I look at it, there is no easy way to box in the sewer pipe without framing a wall under it, but, more importantly, installing the wall angle for the drop ceiling will be nearly impossible without stud walls on all sides.  Sadly, though, the layout will probably need to be disassembled into its door sections, so I can move them around the room while I work.  Yikes.

@Dave Vollmer, I have liked the color you used on your walls since you first painted them.  I agree that it's a good hazy color, but it's also a neutral that won't have to be repainted when you sell the house.

As for ceilings, I am a proponent of light-colored ceilings to brighten the room.  Regardless of color, I have no interest in spending days and days trying to paint all of the nooks and crannies in those joist bays with the pipes and electrical wires in there, while trying to keep the paint off the layout.  I much prefer a drop ceiling, and, for comparison, the finished part of our basement doesn't feel too low to me.

In my 102-year-old cavement (cave-basement) I just staple-gun plain 3'x5' cardboard that is white on one side to the joists. Although I've been thinking that cheap white foamcore board would be easier to manage since it is more rigid than cardboard. Just means that I'll have to spend money rather than just wait for free cardboard to appear every so often.

If you ever need a cheap electrician to lend a hand with the lighting, drop me a line. I'll bring my tools and my copy of the NEC.

Thanks for the offer, Cody!  I might take you up on that.

Dave do you have the Feb 16 issue of Trains?  Has a map of what's left of the SCL today.

No, I don't.  It would probably break my heart, but I'll be on the lookout for a copy.  Thanks for the heads-up, Bob!

Man, if my boys and I don't show up at Lowe's on a weekly basis, I'm pretty sure they'd issue and APB on us, as Missing Persons.  Two trips there in the past four days!

It sounds like you'd benefit from more thorough planning and better shopping lists.  :D

Don't laugh. We're doing the renovation thing "for real" these days and have contractor accounts everywhere. We were at the plumbing wholesaler, and I was kidding around with the owner about being there for the second time that day, mentioning the old adage about "three trips" for any D-I-Y plumbing project. He said, "Oh, the pros have to do that, too!"

We've tried the other approach, "planning ahead" for all contingencies on our supplies runs. What happens there is you get more than you need and stuff you don't need. And then, by the time you deal with the intervening distractions - like buying an apartment building - you get the round-tuit for the project you bought the parts for, realize that the whole concept was flawed, and it's too late to take the stuff back, or it's building materials, which you can't take back, leaving you with of big piles of surplus materials you have to move every time you want to do something in or near the space they occupy. LOL.  I'll echo what Mike said.  Nothing ever goes to plan.  Now I understand why my Dad always made three trips to True Value when he did anything when we were younger!

My kids love Lowe's.  They actually ask to go, just to look around.  I think it's the racing shopping carts.  :)  Which by the way stink at hauling anything worthwhile.

Are you kidding me?  I love you, Atlas.  The newest announcement from Atlas has three N scale Seaboard Coast Line GP40s in the black and yellow scheme.  Nice.  These will look great patched for the SBD.  Thank you, Atlas!  I'm expecting their release of three B36-7s and three GP38-2s in SBD colors at any time.

P.S. You Western Maryland fans are included in this announcement.  In fact, @wm3798 should be really excited by the release of WM GP40 #3798!

It's nice to know they're still out there.  Meanwhile SD90s are being stored, sold, or traded.  Haha!  I love it.  Long live first and second generation locomotives.
