I received my order of turnouts and cork roadbed from MBK yesterday and was able to install the track in the A&R staging yard last night.  It's hard to see in this photograph, but there is a crossover between the first and second tracks to allow locomotives to escape and run around the train.

Black paint for the whole thing would probably look like cinders and make the area disappear, except for the kudzu coming. Nothing makes kudzu disappear.

The access is not great, so it's probably not the straightest track that I've ever laid.  But it's sufficient for a staging yard.  Hopefully, it will get easier to install the track as I get closer to the front of the shelf.  The rear tracks weren't all that much fun to install.

I have considered just painting the whole thing black (a la Carolina Central's staging tracks), but will probably just lay down basic ballast with a kudzu-covered stone retaining wall between the levels.  That's just so it won't look unfinished, but it's not intended to be a finished scene.

Thanks, Philip.  At a minimum, the bridge is a decent stand-in until something better comes along. 

Through truss? That would give you a thin deck and prototypical look. Maybe rework the old Atlas through truss and cut it down...

I've got half of the SBD staging yard installed.  While I'm installing a crossover to allow locomotives to escape, I really think I'll mostly use the yard for storage of entire trains, especially my unit trains.  As seen in the following picture, my coal train and my double stack train fit into staging nicely.  This pays dividends in that it clears out a logjam in Hamlet Yard.

Sorry no pictures, but I did finish the cork roadbed in the SBD staging yard last night. I only have two stub tracks (with a pair of #5 turnouts as a crossover) and some slide switch turnout controls to install, and then the trackwork on the staging yards will be finished. Unfortunately, work has been crazy (I haven't taken a day off in a week-and-a-half, and I may have to work through this weekend, too), so this has really slowed down the construction of the staging yards. This should have been something that I could have completed in a weekend or in two or three evenings. But, we'll get there.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the bridge on a curve really makes a through truss a problem for snagging equipment.  Plus, the span is so short that I-girders should be able to support this weight.  I think that the railroad would go for simplicity and cost, which would be I-girders over a through truss.  I could be wrong.
