Just three extra feet can get you more traffic and added interest. Heck, the extension would be bigger than many whole layouts I've built...

Thanks, DKS.  That's almost exactly what I have in mind.  Stop at the water heater but don't go around or over it.  The tank is supposed to be circa 2011, but I don't really want to invite a leak or have to deal with tearing out the layout later to get it out.  Let's face it water heaters are given a life expectancy of something like 7-10 years, and I'm already 3+ years in.

John,

I need a #7 left, two curved turnouts that I'll have to build by hand, and a boatload of #5 turnouts.  Thankfully, the #5s are supposed to become available next month.

DFF

does the #7 have to be new?  I have some of Jerry Brittons old stash still in stock?

@John : No, it doesn't have to be new, as long as it's useable and not mutilated beyond repair.  Name your price plus shipping, if you have a #7 left.

@Chris333 : Thank you very much, but my plan is all #5s and #7s.  If John can spare a #7, then all I need are #5s, which are supposed to be available next month.

Thanks, guys,

What are the plans right above the SBD locomotives jn the last pic? Seems to be calling for something.

Funny you should ask.  I was just looking at that picture and thinking the same thing.  Scenery?  Industry?  It probably wouldn't hurt to do some research in the Hamlet area of North Carolina and see if there's an interesting feature I can throw in.

Looking good. This layout almost makes me want to re-think my decision of modelling in HO scale, but I have way to much time and money invested in HO to switch now.

Golden spike!

I made it, though, despite now being out of cork roadbed.  I literally have no usable scraps left.  Whew.  The mainline curves have been superelevated with strips of masking tape, and everything seems to be tracking well.  No derailments yet.

Excellent!  At least you don't have to wait for a container from China for more cork...
