The roads look great Dave, it's nice to see a proper right of way and parking modeled as well. The whole layout is very well done, you do great things on those HCD's, looking forward to seeing how you expand it.

Just a quick update, because I likely won't have time to work on the layout anymore this weekend.  I finished the wood grade crossing over the A&R track last week, so I've moved onto more street and sidewalks in Aberdeen:

I decided to get a little brave tonight and went for a test shot of paint on the street, curb, and sidewalk.  Here, you see Rustoleum light gray primer for the base of the road's eventual color.  I used DKS' suggestion of Testor's Light Aircraft Gray as the base for the curbs and sidewalk.  As in many areas, some of the streets in Aberdeen have the concrete "gutter," so the pavement remains about 12" or so from the actual curb.  Replicating this actually made it easier to mask and paint the curb and sidewalk, because I didn't have to butt the masking tape tight against the curb.  I like it.  Some highway striping and weathering will really bring this together.

Thanks, guys!

Chris, I really know how to procrastinate like you wouldn't believe when I get to a point where I'm really worried about screwing something up.  I'm already on my fourth or fifth attempt to build the streets from scratch.

Love the gutters!  What about drawing a thin black line (pencil, sharpie?) between the two to simulate the gap where gunk collects?  I dunno if that's very realistic or not...

I plan on doing most of the weathering with chalk and laying some grime down in the gutter is part of the plan.  I need to get the street markings down first, though.  I've got my yellow and white colored pencils.  But first, I need to find our pencil sharpener, so I can get consistent sharpened points on the pencils before drawing the lines.

Dave, Loving the streets and sidewalks great job. With the lines added and some weathering they are going to look top notch. Now when it comes to the unballasted track, well.........  :D

I like it a lot. Pretty much the same color I used on the SIB. I did have difficulty finding light aircraft gray up here though, and my source of it, Ben Franklin's, has finally closed their doors.

Looks great but one suggestion... I have never been in a town down south, especially during the summer, where there weren't weeds growing in the cracks of the pavement, sidewalks, gutterways, etc.  Got weeds?

Bryan,

You're exactly right.  I've been looking carefully at sidewalks lately for detail inspiration.  In fact, I was going to install the "weeds" after I stripe and weather this first stretch of sidewalk/street and just post the pics without mentioning it to see the response from my fellow asshats.  But, you blew the surprise.   ;)

I attempted to do some striping and preliminary weathering on this road section tonight.  I'll likely try to do a little more blending to feather the traffic lanes a little better.  I still have yet to hit it with a coat of Dullcoat, which I hope will also fade the weathering a little.  Since this is chalk weathering that's very possible.  The striping was done with colored pencils.  I'm very pleased with the stripes.  Thanks to DKS for the colored pencil trick, especially to do the yellow over white to make it stand out better.
