I'd go for it; you have the layout to support a small 50's era passenger train and it is, after all, model railroading, and you would be modeling railroading by modeling the passenger train, the ACL is an (awesome) railroad to model, I say go for it

Thanks for the support.  It is done; the order has been placed with MBK.  I think I'll hold off on the baggage cars for now.  I wouldn't need them with a "heritage unit" in the 1980s, and I don't want to order them unless I can build a reasonable 1950s ACL passenger train.  I'll have to research to see what other ACL cars are out there before I pull the trigger.

Have you ever read "By Streamliner New York to Florida"? If not, I have a copy you can borrow. It's got all sorts of fun info about that era of railroading.

Ed,

No I haven't.  If you haven't noticed, all of my favorite roads are the ones upon which those very streamliners plied the rails.  I'd love to borrow your copy.  At the same time, I'll return your Lehigh Valley book, which was very enjoyable to thumb through.  Thanks.

Haha! I was wondering who had that currently!

Sounds good. I'll try and remember it if the next time I'll see you isn't at my place.

I'll remind you.   ;)

On another note, it looks like it was good not to procrastinate on my purchase of the ACL E7A last night.  MBK is now out of stock overnight.

It's here!  No complicated set up required to run on my Digitrax DCC system.  I placed it on the rails, and, in seconds, it was running like a champ[ion].  ACL fans will get that lame joke.  The sound is better than I expected, since this is N scale.  I'm very pleased with the purchase.  Here's a crappy video for you:

That's gotta be one of the most eye catching passenger schemes around.

I agree, Philip.  When I lived in Virginia and North Carolina and was immersed in southeastern U.S. railroading, I fell in love with the purple and silver scheme of the ACL.  The only reason I never modeled it as my primary focus was because I always end up back in the 1980s-era of railroading, hence my choice to model the ACL successor: Seaboard System.

Now buy the baggage cars :)

I did better than that, Eric.  I only bought one of the ACL baggage cars, because they're going for practically MSRP on the Bay.  I found a retailer who only had one road number, but it was almost ten dollars cheaper!  So, I just got the one.  But, that's okay, because when I began the search on eBay, I came across a few Centralia 4-4-2 sleepers for the ACL with a starting bid of only $17.95 (even MBK sold them for $29.99 each back when they were in stock).  I bid the minimum price, since there was only fifteen minutes left, and won both smoothside sleepers.  Combined shipping, and I have two sleepers for almost the price of one!

So, my ACL passenger train consists of E7A #524, baggage car #1624, 4-4-2 sleeper Manatee River, and 4-4-2 sleeper Savannah River.  I'll probably add at least one more car to create a reasonable length local, but I'll look through my ACL books for an appropriate car that's available.  I might even add a foreign road car to further mix it up.

One of the hallmarks of ACL passenger service was run-through traffic.

An FEC, PRR, or even New Haven car wouldn't be that far out of place.
