Ok, I need to start making better trees with my SuperTree stash. Adam, what are you doing to prep them? Are you doing the glycerine thing? Tell me about that.

Not to hijack Dave's thread, but I don't do the glycerine thing either.  I break up the entire box into individual trees, I just toss them into a large box.  I then use a soldering iron on the crooked ones, applying the tip directly to where it bends.  I then hold pressure on the tree in the direction of the bend to straighten them out.  I then hit them with flat black rattle can, let them dry and back into a large box.  When I apply leaf, I use spray adhesive (currently LocTite 200, sprays a mist).  At that point, I stick the finished tree into foam like Dave does.

@Hornwrecker had a straightening process that involved boiling them first in "something" and then hanging them.

Damned if I can remember what it is tho.

I installed the newest batch of trees tonight (the trees at right on the ridge above the A&R main line in the picture below).  As expected, ten trees don't go very far.  On the bright side, Scenic Express shipped my order of scenery materials today.

I always marvel at how such humble beginnings can be shaped into something with care and effort.  Part of the magic of model railroading  :D

Haha!  Coincidentally, I ordered some scenery materials from Scenic Express this week, and I'm hopeful that I can do something with the bare shoreline around the lake.  I couldn't find anything to really do cattails, but I might be able to pull off some sort of reeds or grasses.  Stay tuned.

I'm sure that Noch has something Dave can use.

The club I am in had a former member who made cat tails by using very thin brass rods painted green with an end that he dipped into a shade of brown paint.  He drilled a hole the same size as the brass rod and glued it into the water. If I remember correctly he used a .015 brass rod and a .016, #78 drill bit.  Experiment with this and see what you can come up with.
