Bridge construction began today.  I used 0.060" black styrene for the road surface with Plastruct I-beams, strips, and tubing for the bridge's superstructure and piers.  I just planted it in some lightweight spackling to fill the voids under the bridge.  Once the spackling sets up, I'll pop the bridge free and clean up any excess spackling.  Then, I'll continue construction of the bridge's railings, as well as the approaches, road, and parking lot.

Know you're already starting the bridge, but that's a lot of bridges on yr layout.
With very similar characteristics.

Howabout having that section be a length of scrub & trees?
(Will still be able to see upper factory through them).

Food for thought.

Maybe Dave has a bridge construction company on the layout that needs business.

M.C.,

You're probably right.  But, I needed road access to the industries in Raeford, and I am going to try to build this bridge with a different look.  Instead of the Jersey Wall look, I'm going for the type seen throughout North Carolina in the last half of the 20th century:

If I can pull this off, it will be cool and help set the locale.

As for the cut, you nailed it; scrub and trees.  Like this:

You have to revisit Kevin Beck's layout (JustTrainCrazy)  He's got the standard NC highway bridge nailed.  At least for the interstates.

I took the opportunity this evening to completely disassemble three IM FP7s and a Life Like GP18 (LL shell on an Atlas frame) to clean and relube them.  The IM units were full of dried out lube, but even the Atlas frame needed to have some gunk removed.  At least two of the locomotives had become growlers, but, now, all four units are running much quieter and smooth again.  Success!

I grabbed a quick video this morning to show off a location on my layout that has become a go-to railfanning spot.  As the roughed-in road bridge and cut are beginning to give an idea of the final scene, I have found myself just watching trains roll through the short straight section in the cut with superelevated curves on each end.

Please pardon the shaky video until YouTube finishes editing the clip.

Thanks for watching,

Wow @davefoxx with the low line under the bridge and the high line coming around the engine house that will be fabulous - especially with some kudzu down the bank. This might even eclipse Casselman Crossing as a signature TRW scene.

Might want to think about making a module that would complete the hill on the left and fill in the off-layout area between the cut and staging. I'm thinking something removable just for taking photos/videos

Love the scene and the cut! Is the blue building in its permanent spot? Looks like its ready spill down the hill if there is ever a hard rain.

I've actually built out the hill there a little bit more around that structure's foundation since the video was taken, but I will likely toss in a small retaining wall near that one corner to make it more plausible.

Scratchbuilding a bridge continues.  I started the railings tonight.  This is the look that I'm going for:

I was able to build two of eight sections of railing:

Unfortunately, I won't have much more time to work on the bridge this weekend, but I'll post more pics as progress takes place.
