Geeps w/ DB and TT's...no model ?
« on: January 17, 2012, 11:43:23 AM »

I am looking at a number of Canadian Pacific GP9's that were used in passenger and freight service, ergo they had a steam generator and water tank, thus the need for the "torpedo tube" roof mounted air tanks and want to model one, but a search of the Atlas data base shows no Geeps with TT's and Dynamic Brakes, such as the CPR units had....

Was Canadian Pacific unique in having GP9's with dynamic brakes and roof mounted air tanks ? if not; who else might have had them, and I wonder why Atlas hasn't offered this option during one of their many Geep offerings...

I'm guessing this means kitbash for Puddy..............

Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

:|         Pud, only TT equiped Geep's from Atlas  all appeared to be for flatland roads. I have 2 Milwaukee and they lack the DB's. I feel your pain. maybe the old add on DB Blister from a Arnold Rapido GP could be attached to a non DB ,TT locomotive. Nate Goodman (Nato).

Mike -

The other major purchasers of GP-7/9 units w/ top mounted air tanks were Northern Pacific, Great Northern and Southern Pacific.
I know the Milwaukee had a couple of units and there were certainly others, however not in large numbers like the above listed roads, whose units were all not equipped with dynamics.
I don't know that I've ever seen others like the CP pictures you posted.
Thanks for sharing.

The CPR HAD to have dynamic brakes for it's units given the topography of a lot of Canada; the 3 E8's that the CPR rostered never made it west of Calgary for the reason they lacked dynamic brakes. The Geeps served long and we in British Columbia where DB's are a critical requirement.....

I've either never seen shots of these units or just didn't notice the torpedo tubes on CPR Geeps. Thanks for the enlightenment, Pud. Any clue how long they carried the tubes? Right up to rebuild?

While I am no way informed as the exact configuration of the CPR roster Pud, I can point out that the Maine Central Did roster 11 GP-7's with Steam Generators, BUT NO Torpedo Tubes. They has a small water tank, that did not necesitate the moving of the air tanks to the Roof. I am guessing your Geeps may have been road configured or such a small population of the general production no one has ever produced a model.

It appears that the majority of them kept their TT's until the GP9u rebuild program began; so some would have had them well into the 80's....the example being 8502 ...still has the TT's....

Here it is in Roman font....

Here it is in 1988 in Action Red....

I have to model at least one of these guys; they were used for local passenger service on the KVR (you see them on excursion footage) and throughout the interior of BC... I want to do this one; TT's w/ DB's, steam genny, winterization hatch, Pyle headlamps and high nose bell....does it get any more CPR-eclectic than this ?

I'm just not sure "where to start"......

It is entirly possible that your CPR GP's may have had dynamics and steam generators without roof air tanks.

Possible but I don't think so; the rugged interior of BC required some longer runs and I suspect that the larger water tank was a requirment... but now that you ention it I will pull out Rail Canada 3 and have a look....

I checked out your photos, should have done that first and changed my post. When Atlas first released the SD-24 I bought somebody's detail part to model and SD-26 with roof tanks, I never got around to it because they announced the SD-26 configuration before I built the model, so I just ordered a shell for my SD-24 mechanism. Let me look through my part stash and see what it was I bought.

Atlas SD-26 and SD-24 parts might be a good place to look for single tanks and piping pieces.

Unless you have a source for steam generator detail parts my suggestion would be to get an Atlas Dynamic brake shell, and a non-dynamic TT shell and fuel/water, your going to need the short hood from the non dynamic shell for steam generator detail, and the dynamic brake long hood. And I would definatly look at those SD air tanks unless you want to make your own from Rod stock and wire. IT is entirely possible you may need to fashion the piping from wire anyway. The detail parts I had were Sunrise parts, which are very diffucult to find any more. As I recall they used to make a steam generator detail set too. If you can find steam generator details then All you will need is the Dynamic brake equipped shell.

Aren't the various GP-7/GP-9 parts also available?  Seems you could order a GP-7 TT shell and a GP-9 w/DB shell directly from Atlas and just combine the two.

They make a GP9 TT too.

I agree with Wardie. putting the tanks on a DB unit will be MUCH easier than putting DB on a tanked unit, because the tanks are wrong for this, anyway.
