It appears the image is less than accurately colored probably due to levels adjustment by either the camera or photographer. The red-orange hues are way too similar throughout the photograph - leaves, rails, bridge, distant trees, subtle hue of the deck ties, etc. That fact is what leads me to believe the photo has been color manipulated. The look is indicative of a filter having been applied. Still, the orange of the rusty rails is very similar to the bridge color suggesting the bridge was originally black and most of the paint has worn away allowing the steel to rust. At least that is what my eyes see in the picture.

That's the way it looks to me as opposed to a black bridge, rusting.

This modeler needs to refine his dry-brushing techniques. Could use improvement...

But seriously, try black with some subtle rusting effects. If it were me, I'd hit it with just one shot of RustAll.

With most weathering techniques, the weathering color ends up in the nooks and crannies... washes, powders, etc...  A rookie error I frequently see is a black painted bridge poorly weathered with the addition of rust.  The rust ends up in the wrong locations.  Instead of baked off paint and surface rust, you get pools of rust in the crannies. 

I think Ian's on top of this y'all.  Starting with the rust color and toning it down with darker washes and paint applications has a much better chance of looking right in the end.

No, I am 90% sure they were bare steel and then black "dipped". The complete rust is something that I have seen on just about every bridge in Northern New England. Formerly black and not maintained. The rust does need to be toned down. But the stand in is just that, a stand in.

I took some photos of the truss on the former B&M Conway Branch that is down the street from my house. We run motorcars and snowmobiles over it now. These I just grabbed with my cell phone.

Ian is on the right path (crooked maybe ...). The Whitford bridge was first painted with Red Lead and then black. This is how that treatment looks today.



Too bad you don't have room for a 12" bridge, I have a great one in mind.   :trollface:

I am hoping to. I am using up a weeks vaca this month, and my other 2 weeks in July for Alaska, so I am trying to schedule some swaps and use some P days to work out Trainfest. I would need Thurs-Monday off since its about a 22hr drive...maybe longer this time as I will have the trailer. I also need to hear back from Trainfest.

The layout will be making its first 2013 tour stop at Railfair in Shirley, MA on April 7 where a good amount of sceney is expected to be completed. It will be the first N scale layout in attendance at the show. Hoping to have all the signal logic done by then as well, my buddy Matt who is a Pan Am Rwys signal maintainer is doing all the NORAC logic.
