Ian,

What material did you use for the new retaining wall?  Is that hydraulic cement?  I need to pour some bridge abutments and would love some guidance.

Thanks,

Ian
 Concrete wall?
From what your modeling, I was thinking that there was some type of remodeling in the space at that plant.
Should the wall be cut stone verses concrete?  As it may have been orginially installed when the plant first opened?
A mere suggestion that this is the oldest part of the plant site.
A possible idea solution might be to make a section of the cut stone wall replaced by poured concrete to demonstrate the history of that property and how things change over periods of time.

A page or so back suggestions were made to make it not a cut stone wall as it would have been "too much" for the scene. There is a retaining wall that is cut stone where the track is on the left, which would in theory be the oldest part of the complex. The areas of the concrete wall would actually be the newest part of the complex, as it is where the brick curtain with reinforcing concrete frame style construction will be, compared to the straight solid  brick curtain construction of the older background building.

Ian,
Like your river, I think it looks great but there is one thing that bothers me and it's that one rock in the middle, it just doesn't look right. I think it has something to do with the color of it it just doesn't match up with all the other rock. just my opinion though so keep up the good work.

Jon,
It maybe wet and look off. The rock came from the same rock that was used for the outcroppings and river bottom that I got from the Saco River.  I can always color it if it still looks off.

Dave,
Its Quickcrete Anchor Bolt Cement.  I used it many years ago on the old layout for some abutments. I really like working with the stuff. I wanted to use it in a few other places on this layout, but where this travels to shows, I was concerned about flexing of the modules during movement breaking the concrete on the places I wanted to use it. Hence why here it is thicker, and the foam will hopefully absorb most of the shock/flex.

I remember really liking that retaining wall.  Is it colorized at all, or is that the natural Quickcrete color?

That is the natural color. Only thing I added was rust streaks with powers for the bridge shoes. I did have to hit the powders with Dulcoat as they turned out glossy against the concrete.

They will come out of the mold really dark, and will take about 2 days to get to its "natural" color.

Here is the mold I had built for that abutment. it was a one time thing.

The graf was done with gel pens.

Agreed. And said river may be a bit too pristine in its current form (alas). Maybe park an EPA truck nearby...

But Dave, the factory would have cleaned up their act by now right!?!

Ok here is where it is at so far. Lots more to do. Some out buildings are on their way, and I am looking for some poles to start building a step down station. Some BLMA fence is on its way as well.

Looks good.
I like the angles.
Is that dirt or grout or ? around the wall and above?
Nice color and texture.

Its is Polyblend sanded grout. I love the stuff and use it just about everywhere as a base now.

I was able to get a little bit of work done today. I'm battling a bad cold, and standing up too long makes me light headed.

+2.  What color(s) of grout are you using?  Are you mixing colors to get any variation or is it coming out of the carton like that?

Oh, and thanks for the response about the anchor bolt cement.  It's definitely how I want to make the abutments under a bridge on my layout.

Thanks and feel better soon,
Dave
