Sad fact about that is, most people don't care about how we take N scale to the next level.  They just want to see trains run, and don't much car about the advanced scenery techniques, the highly detailed locomotives and rolling stock, etc. 

I'd say about 10% of the crowds we deal with when showing MiNi "get it."  The rest fo them complain about how tall it is.   

I witnessed one of these suggestions last year at Trainfest. I can't remember if it was you or Bill, but you were polite to this rude guy. I KNOW it wasn't Skibbe! It goit me thinking that  you guys need one of those spring loaded boxing gloves mounted at the "correct height" to take care of this problem. A quick shot to the (you know) through the valance curtain...they'll never know what hit them. Most look like candidates for heart attacks, so their rolling around on the ground would look natural.

How tall are your layouts?

We had our modules set at 50" and my layout is at 52".  It's what we considered a good viewing/working height for N.
We had the same complaints of being too tall at every show.
The parents complained because they had to hold the kids up to see them, which I thought was a bonus.  It kept the kids from grabbing things.
The only ones that I felt bad for was the folks in wheelchairs.  We had one old gal who must have been mad at the world and we thought she was going to sue us cause she couldn't see any of the it.  We offered to help her stand up but she wanted nothing to do with that and rolled away grumbling!

Mine is at 56" which is about perfect for my 5'08" height. I based it off of my previous layouts and also after seeing the NY Modelers Of Distinction's HO modular layout many years ago.

I had a guy with a wheelchair at the Concord show last weekend and he was able to prop himself up to see...but then again the layout is just bare foam at this point so there wasn't much to look at. And yes it does keep little hands away. One kid wanted to run his Thomas Brio's on the layout while his mother was holding him and she did nothing... and then again there was a 40ish YOM who was physically leaning on the layout, arm propped up on the fascia board so he could talk on his phone. Stern warning was made or else 50,000 volts in two probes reached him!

Modutrak is at 50 or 51" to the rail top.  I don't recall which.  I think 50 sounds right.

Dave saw me get the brunt of a major "I crapped my pants and I'm going to be pissed at the world" dude at Trainfest last year.  I try to be cordial, but after awhile you just roll your eyes and walk away.

LOL you can always electrify the ropes that sometimes are used to keep people away from layouts. When they lean on them to look close and start complaining, just just F7 on the DCC controller and ZAP

Some rock work is being done. Lots and lots of gray industrial tile blocks to be scored and snapped and stacked.
