I own an airbrush, but I've never unpacked it.

The point being that spray bombs can be used to good effect, depending on the desired result.

One of the tricks is to direct the spray near the model, rather than at it; this allows finer mist to reach the model.

What color spray bombs and chalks did you use?  I don't own an airbrush (and am red-green colorblind), and I will need to build roads sometime in the near future.  Me likey.

Just generic light grey and dark grey primer, either Rust-O-Leum or Krylon, or both, not sure--I have maybe two dozen flavors of primer sitting around. For the road, I actually sprayed them on simultaneously for a more homogeneous mix of color. For the chalk, I used dark grey weathering powder from Bragdon, although just about anything in the way of dark grey powdered chalk will work, even ground-up pastels, which I also use a lot.

The stripes, BTW, were done with colored pencils. Yellow colored pencil is translucent, so I apply a white stripe first, then go over it with yellow. I like it because it looks aged without having to do anything else, and it doesn't add thickness like pin striping tape.

For a long time the staples of my spray booth have been grey primer, oxide red primer, ruddy brown primer, silver aluminum, flat black and flat white.  All but the ruddy brown were available at Walmart for about $.97 a can.  For some reason prices have gone up and selection has gone down, though.  I've had to go to $4 cans of Rust O Leum for oxide red, aluminum, and brown.

I used a blend of white, black and gray to do the road surface on the bridge over Cumberland.  If it survives as part of a module, I'll add the chalk weathering, too.

Well it eventually translates to the replacement bridge so its all good.


My stock of spray bombs has increased over the last two years as I have become increasing infavor of their better quality in paint and the nozzles. I am pleased at how thin some go on these days and the fact that so many come in flat now.

I always keep on hand
Assorted gray primers
Assorted red primers
Assorted black primers
White Primer
Ruddy Brown Primer - My favorite "brick" color
Periwinkle - I use this for that "prefab metal building blue"
Fern - Used for bridge I beams
Sand - Lighter brick color
Espresso - Just picked this up and may use it as a "base" color for a rusty bridge.

Ok here is the "expresso" from Rustoleum. There is also one one shade lighter that may be better to start out with as a base for the rust coloring.
