Started working on some greenery this past week.   I ended up redoing the water in the river as it did not turn out the way I wanted it. It was way too "deep" for a White Mountains run off river. You should be able to see the bottom and it should be very rocky. So a couple bags of rip rap, and some real rock and soil from the Saco River provided the base of the river, and got it more towards what I am eventually aiming for.  The inspiration on what the final river will look like came from the Wild River that runs from NH to ME via Evans Notch in the area of Rt. 113 and US Rt. 2

The river required 2 pours of EnviroTex. Liquitex gloss medium will be applied in a few layers to get that "moving" feel. I added one layer already.

I'm starting to add some base green as well.  Still lots of mixed colors and a shiznit ton of trees to add to the hills.

Along the interstate I used 6mm Silfor, and then cut it along the road edge with a pair of hair clippers as if DOT had been mowing. I just need to find a nice Wiking tractor to build a boom mower.

And the quick grab shots.

Nice! Looks just like the river in the photo of that real river.   :D

You have a lot of groovy textures and angles in the scene.
Love the tiles: great contrast to the water.
Cheers!

Beautiful work!  The patch in the road looks very convincing, as does everything else that is done so far.

There is a *lot* of 6 mm Silflor in my future.  I can't wait.

Was it the MC D326? I saw that one and it is pretty nice. I thinking of getting on of the Athearn  JD's or Wiking's MF 8280 with the enclosed cab, just as its going to have a 3 point mounted boom flail mower on it... Safety First ya know.

I'm looking for comments on this section:

This will be a relatively small mill....I'm thinking small paper mill, but I'm up in the air with a possible GE plant as well. These are the 2 buildings I have in mind at this point; The front building being the most recent construction. The will have some walkways and piping and a road between them to "link" them together.

I'm also pondering adding a 3rd track. This would allow you to have spotting points for the rear building on track 1, and the foregound building on track 3, with storage/on hand/switching space on track 2.

Gary, where is it that you're putting 3' tall grass? Weeds in the Tehachapis tend to be on the short side as wild grasses go. The dry season starting in May pretty much stunts anything that managed to sprout March-April. I guess the 6mm is good for conveying that "tall grass" feeling better than shorter cuts, but maybe think about 4mm?

I'm looking for comments on this section: ...

You know the first thing that struck me, Ian? What looks in the photo like mainline-quality roadbed on the spurs. There are shortlines everywhere that wish their mains looked like that.  ;)  Spotting tracks in that setting would typically be laid on graded, compacted soil with very little other subroadbed work and just enough ballast to keep the ties from shifting around. And definitely poorly-groomed dirt near end-of-track. Also consider macadam over the ties in and around the buildings.

Since you don't need to model the back side of that back building, you could easily chop a column of windows off each side, push the building back a bit, add the third track, and then use the building back and one-column window sides as a flatter flat to the right to extend the complex even more & make it look more massive.

Oh the industrial track is far from finished. I do all base ballasting first and then I come in and crap the shiznit out of it. The ground will also eventually be leveled out with it so it does not look like it has this awesome high speed profile.

There is more than enough room for the 3rd track. The photo may be giving a false sense of depth. I'm planning on taking the back of the building off. Its from a previous layou that was to have it visible from all angles.

Might want some supporting walls for spots along that slope between the mill tracks and the river.  It is a bit steep in places and some support would be prototypical.  I would be tempted to build out the flat area more towards the river and put in supporting walls.  These industrial plants rarely leave space unused, and you could use it for some nice foreground detailing or mini-scenes.
