GE AC4400CW Canadian Pacific Version Details:
After looking at my fleet of Kato N scale CP GE AC4400CWs and pictures of the real thing I got really frustrated with the incorrect detailing of these units so I decided to do a little research myself.
After a few nights and looking at hundreds of pictures I compiled the info below.
I now have a new found respect for manufacturers and what they have to go through to produce a model when there are so many variations throughout the years.
And my hats off to the modelers and kitbashers out there!
All my info was compiled from info I found here (what a great website!) -> http://www.cprdieselroster.com/
And a picture found here -> http://www.railfan.ca/

An impressive bit of research - thanks for sharing that with us!

...so, based on what you've found, what units in CP's fleet are the closest match for Kato's model?

I did a bit of research some years ago when I bought my models, and my understanding was that Kato had picked the only two units from the 1995 order that wore the golden rodent paint scheme (due to being repainted after major repairs) - this left me thinking there were limited choices for renumbering without changing over to self-steering trucks, but now that I know from your research that other units have been retrucked I might look in to this again!

Cheers,

Stu

Well, that’s the problem.

The Kato Cab with attached panels is a mixture of years.
The equipment box is 1995 to 1998.
Cab left side:
The 1st vent (left to right) should be covered on all models and the styling of the other vent was only used in 2001.
Cab right side:
The cross? style vents were used from 1995 to 1998.
And the riveted? Panel (last one on the left) was used from 1997 to 2004.

The Kato hood is also a mixture of years.
The rear grills were used from 1997 to 2004.
The position of the air intake was used from 2001 to 2004.
Rear:
The vertical duo rear light was only used in 2004, all others should be single.
The low sanding position was only used in 1995; all others should be above the rear light.
The left grab irons should be evenly spaced on all models and there would also be a single grab iron on the right at the same height as the 2nd from the bottom left.

So to me the Kato cab best represents a 1997 to 1998 model (if you correct the left side vents)
If you correct the right side vents and left side equipment box you could update the cab to 2001.
To update the cab even further (2002 to 2004) you would also need to correct the left side vents.

The hood to me best represents a 2004 model (if you correct the sanding position).
If you correct the sanding position and rear light you could back date the hood to 2001.
To back date the hood even further (1998 / 1997) you would also need to correct the air intake and underlying maintenance doors.

And I was thinking by using the Kato CP ES44AC (which is 2005 based) cab with the AC4400CW hood (if it fits) and Self Steering trucks one could make a very accurate 2004 CP AC4400CW.
