Received the new "Model Railroader" DVD's today...

All loaded and running!

Very easy to use and I already love the search function.  Type in a word like "weathering" and in seconds you get all the articles where "weathering" is mentioned.  No having to pull out heavy box after heavy box in the basement looking for issues.

Come Wednesday the rest of my MR's will be out in the recycle pile.  ;)

Got mine a couple of days ago.  The search is very helpful looking up road-specific articles from way back.

Are you talking about the unsolicited DVD?
I received one and returned it per instructions.
I do not know if Model Railroader was responsible for me receiving it; I do know I do NOT like to receive unsolisticed items and am not pleased that Model Railroader would be promoting this or selling my address to the company who mailed the DVD.

They're talking about the 75 years of MR magazines on DVD.

The DVD you received is from Kalmbach too.  You don't HAVE to return it since it wasn't solicited.  Next time just think of it as a free gift.  They're probably less likely to keep sending them if eveyone keeps it and doesn't send the requested money.

^ I just had a falahback to the complaining about those DVDs five years ago.....

If the MR DVD's are like the Trains ones, they're worth their weight.  My Dad loves his copies.

Roger, I was referring to the "75 Years of Model Railroader" on DVD, like someone else mentioned.

I did receive one of those unsolicited DVD's and returned it.

Will the "75 Years of Model Railroader" on DVD also run on Linux?
I understand they are just pdf-files, but what is Windows-specific?

Any experience would be helpful  :?

It says Windows or Mac.  You are correct though that the magazines are in PDF format.  You would be losing the search capability in Unix/Linux, but you would still have all of the reference material.

And if you want the search to run on Linux, there are some really nice open-source apps that will parse and index all of those PDF files for you.  I run those on servers for my clients, but there's nothing preventing them from running on a laptop or desktop.  Works fast, too!

I'm running it on my Mac without issue.  Anyone want to tell me how I can transfer it to my iPad?  Are the PDF's encrypted?

I just checked.  Not encrypted, but password-protected.

So negative on simply copying the PDF files to an iPad?

If you can see the password, you can still read them on an iPad.  You'd need to used Adobe's PDF reader or another one that supports passwords, as I don't believe iBook supports passwords.

I got my set yesterday. They would not install. I got a script error message that said contact the manufacturer. I called Kalmbach customer service and they are sending replacement discs. They say they have had some trouble with the way disc 1 and 2 are in their packaging.

Looking forward to getting a copy of this.  On a pad, this will be great for browsing and reference.
