This is good information, thanks!

The thing I got excited about was the announcement that they will soon be offering MR (and I assume Trains, et al) in eReader subscription formats.

Where's that announcement at? I know they've got the DVDs of the old stuff, but I must've missed that announcement,

It was in the latest issue of MR.  I think it was in the editorial maybe.

I'm not seeing any announcement on the website, however...I get a cramp every time I look for something on that website for longer than 60 seconds so I may have overlooked it.

I found the link to the free content announcement but when I clicked it I got "Only registered members of ModelRailroader.com are allowed to see this content"    LOL  :D :P

I understand the need for Kalmbach to make a buck... I have never had a problem about that.  But as a purchaser and reader of MR for 40 years it hardly seems right that buying the magazine from a news stand or a hobby shop should keep me from being able to access the material that they so freely mention in each issue... available to subscribers only.

The attitude of screwing the customers who do not or can not subscribe (scary thought that there are those in the hobby who can't spend a whole lot in any given month but we are here and we buy... and pay a higher price for the same products as well) is a poor attitude, especially so since many of those same customers not all that long ago had the very access that they are now denied.

I think their advertising rates are based on the number of subscribers they have, not newsstand/hobby shop readers. There must be some inducement to get subscribers thus the extra content for those who subscribe.
BTW before I subscribed I didn't know I was missing anything.

Be sure to check out the episode of Cody's office where he reviews my weathering book. :)

Got a link?  I couldn't find it, but I'd love to see it.

P.S. My search for 'Tom Mann' on the MR site yielded 83 hits.  Of the few I scanned, none of them had anything to do with you or Cody...  :RUEffinKiddingMe:

Note added: Found it.

I remember once saying how long will it be till MR shows us how to add DCC to a tree. Check out the latest Cody's Office to see how they do it

Al

That's correct Al.

Plus they make more money through subscribers than they do going through hobby shops and book stores.

Why not have a password that is monthly that would allow those who buy at the rack get access.

Because they do not want you (a rack buyer) to have access.  That's the long & short of it.

They want you to be a subscriber.
