N scale Quesiton of the Week! 5 Oct 2011!

Hey everyone! It's that time again! Finals week is coming up for me, and I have some family in from the US to visit, so time isn't exactly abundent right now.

Anyways, This week I was able to track down one more piece of rolling stock for my German/US Millitary Armor train. (the equipment from my wife's unit going out to afghanistan when they deployed) Basicly, think German flat cars, a German 6 axel diesel and US tanks, APC, and equipment on the flats. New toys gotta be played with, But the few european locomotives I have do not have Decoders. I wanted to actually use a DCC'd locomotive to run the stuff. I decided the 44 tonner would work, and it had not been run in a while. problem, My German stuff uses Rapido and Profi couplers, My american stuff uses Knuckles, mostly MT. So rather than trying to convert one of my german flats, or the 44 tonner, I made a conversion device.

Basicly, it is a 3 axel truck from the parts box, with a MT 1015 on one end, and a Rapido on the other end, then the weight from a Bachman condie DCC void glued on top. Overall it is ugly, but it works, and works well, I imagine I will build some kind of body around it eventually, and call it a scale test car, or some kind of test equipment. their is NO prototype for this, but it is totally 100% functional.

Soooo......thats the question! What peice of equipment, bought or built that is totally and completely not prototypical, but 100% functional. Mabey something that makes your model railroading adventures easier!

Ok; I was really, really sick when I did this but, whet the hell; you can always model even when on serious painkillers.....if you have any doubt the truck selection and matching will confirm it...." little dome cars floating through the air... floating through the air...la la la la......." :facepalm:

I made this skeleton car for testing trackwork. It's basically a plastic boxcar chassis, cut down to just the center sill, and a pair of trucks.

The bottle on the right:



Racer 5, by Bear Republic Brewery.
Finest IPA in the West.
100% functional.
Makes the adventures easier, though sometimes creates problems on its own ;)

That, and running my NW2 on my early 1900s layout.
Sometimes its nice to run a loco with 100%  no problems.
(until I get my others tuned up).

Delamaize:  Your car IS prototypical!!!!

The ore trains that run to  Germany and the Netherlands from Sweden have a similar (though 2 "bogie" trucks) conversion car to allow the link and chain Euro locos to couple to the knuckle Swedish ore cars.

These will get more common since the European railways plan to eventually convert to US or Russian knuckle coupler systems.

Speaking of bottles...


Not an actual piece of rolling stock, but an indispensable tool when it came time to relay track in my below-decks staging complex.  I found that a partial filled water bottle made a perfect track clamp when wedged between the benchwork above and the freshly glued flex below!  Eureka!

Made by cutting off the cabs of foul running Mehano FA-2s, and joining them end to end after reversing the wiring to one motor. 85' long, sweet running (heavy), and would pull stumps. Abandoned only because of large flanges.



I actually wanted to put a third powered truck in the middle. :?

This actually sparked my interest in Centipedes, built on DD40X trucks, which would have two motors in the center. The prototype worked, except for the Bachmann split-gear problem.

I'll try and track some down...  You used to see them all the time on the railcam.nl railcam, but they must be routing ore a different way, because I haven't seen one lately.

Huh, Looks intresting, Appears to be one of the hoppers with the top section cut down. I'll have to watch the train shows here.
