Chuck,
I've had the pleasure of seeing this layout up close and personal at two of the Council Bluffs, IA train shows in the last couple of years.
The photos DO NOT do this layout justice.

The details on this layout are exquisite and rival some of the layouts that have been shown here on The Railwire!

The coaling tower looks as if it's been poured from real concrete, the barbed wire fencing, the grass and the trackwork are fantastic.

You can almost feel the hot Wyoming winds blowing.

The sad thing about this layout is most visitors at the show would past this up in favor of the other modular layouts in the hallways because they were larger, had more trains and typical "Out of the Box" scenery with lots of buildings and trees that was crammed into place.

What this layout did not have was long trains that were running as fast as they could, it did not have any Thomas The Tank Engines or Tornados with the Wicked Which flying around, in other words,  "EYE CANDY.  :-X

What it did have was DETAILS!

I'm a big fan of John's work (HuskerN on the other boards) and would love to see it in person some day.  As Allen says, he really does nail the realism in a scene.  His modus operandi is to build small layouts with a particular theme, then sell them and start over.  The latest is Marias Pass and will be featured in the next NSR.

I've encouraged him to join Railwire.  :)

Why am I drawn to aesthetically pleasing layouts?

This is why I like Soeberg, Lestico and now John. tI has to do without
cramming something into every square inch. I am redoing one side
of my HCD because of this. I was going to cram a US Gypsum Plant
down one side of the veiw block. Going to pull and turn the masonite
view block like John did. Keep one side open and one side  town, with
limited cram. I found a 2x4 piece of thick plywood that was used for
a drawer, someone tossed out with small open grid construction. I'm
going to make into either engine terminal or industrial area and force
myself to from over building the HCD.

Barrow was the first modeler that preached less is more on CM&SF!
