If you like the price of the GP30s, just wait until you see the price for the GP38-2s. AZL is planning to release the GP38-2s as an entry level locomotive. It won't have all the bells and whistles (okay technically it will have bells and whistles) as the GP30s and GP7s, but it will be on the same chassis as the GP30. I expect the GP38-2 to be a great candidate for detailing.

Rob,
GP30 distance between the bolster 32', GP38-2 34', that makes approx. 3mm in Z
Really using the same chassis?

Good point. I should say the same basic design of chassis (motor, gearing, PC board, etc).

I just noticed "7.5mm motor", hasn't AZL been using 8mm motors?
So is this a all new motor? I'm interested

The GP30 has a 7.5mm motor. The drive train is redesigned as well. Previously the worms and flywheels were one piece; now they are two.
The frame halves used to be screwed together; now they are held together with the fuel tank and two snap-on parts over the worms.
Be aware of a couple of issues:
1. The light board comes loose very easily during shipping. So, if your loco is DOA, pop the shell and check the light board. Paradoxically, it takes a fair bit of force to re-insert it. (AZL is aware of the problem.)
2. There is only one pilot insert. So, if you want two, you'll have to wait until parts are made available.

Yes, the 7.5mm motor is all new. AZL has been working for years to design and bring the motor to market. It was first used in the Budd RDCs. The great news with this motor is it is allowing AZL to offer locos at better pricing. The 8mm Faulhauber motors are quite expensive, even when purchased in bulk. Another benefit of the 7.5mm is that AZL can continue to offer shells at near prototype width. But they may not need the brass inserts that were used with the GP7s and SD70s. The GP30s though still have the brass inserts.
