Gosh, that looks good!

My only suggestion at this point is to perhaps re-think the photo mural at the end of the layout. Seeing those airplanes frozen in mid-air has a bit of a Twilight Zone effect on the otherwise fine modeling.

I was thinking the same thing earlier this morning.  Where this will really become apparent is in multiple photos of the same location at different times.  The planes will always be there.  I guess this comes out of the fact that our trains move, but little or nothing else on our layouts do.  To me, a layout comes off as more realistic, if there is a reason that the other things are at rest, i.e., car at a railroad crossing or stop sign, person sitting on a bench, etc.  If those things are obviously not at rest, they look frozen in time, and the realism is adversely affected.

Hope this helps,
DFF

The cannery building is a great example of the kind of stuff we can get away with in N scale...  Magnificent in every respect.

Thanks, Lee: we're pretty happy how it turned out.
Still need to find a Del Monte-ish font to make the "Bella Fonte Cannery" sign on top.

As for the planes frozen in time...
well, I dunno.
I can see how having them in the same position in photo after photo would soon look kinda rediculous.
And if the photo was in the middle of the layout smack-dab in view...

At the same time (pun intended), I see it like most other things on the layout that don't move: people, cars, windowshades, etc.
It doesn't bug me that much, and gives it a positive ID that its an airbase.
They did do a lot of training flights around and around the air base ;)
We will put some suggestion of trees on the sides to mask the corners, that might help.

I think by the end, with all the busy stuff going on all over the layout, the planes will be one of those things you might see if you're really looking and adds some "where's waldo" fun.

But the issue of static scenery, people, etc. in relation to the moving trains is a good one to keep in mind.
Just not sure how much we can (or want) to do on this little project ;)
Thanks for the suggestions!

In the middle of karate, soccer, drama, American & Japanese school and morning runs with Dad, we got some things done this week, mainly the Doolittle Freight up against the control box, the rest of the background photo & building flats along the back of the left section and some more ground cover.

Here are some shots of Doolittle Freight:

Here's a wide shot to show how the freight building butts up against the control box:

Soon we'll be building a roof cover for the control box for photography, but until then low shots are alrighty:

When the globs of diluted white glue that cover the area to the immediate right dry we'll take some pictures of the rest of the week's work.
 Thanks for looking.

I'd say the low shots are most certainly alrighty!!  I've been watching as this layout has progressed over the summer and I am very impressed.  Sometimes it feels like I'm playing single A ball while everyone else is playing in the big leagues . . . . Heck, just 12 days ago your post has that building unpainted and in pieces, some very talented work by you and the kids!

Love love love.  I need to get to work on my urban Cumberland scenery so it can be half as effective as what you've done there.

Thanks for all the kind words.
I'm much more comfortable working with wood, so it's been fun to play with styrene.
A lot of the fine-motor stuff and prep work is me, but the kids do do a lot on the layout (haha I said "do do").
Like the buildings: My daughter glued the sections I cut together.  They dried.  My daughter spray-painted the base coat.  It dried.  My son splashed greyish wash all over.  It dried.  My daughter & I painted some doors & window sills.  Dried.  I touched up around the doors and windows.  Dried.  My son splashed weathering stain from the "Big Jug O' Stain" all over.  Dried.  I CA'ed the flats to the backboard.  Dried.  Tah-dah!

At some point though, I would like to see my daughter build her own so I can just move to the advisor role (like Dr. Dave is doing with his son).  Would be good for her sense of ownership.
After this project, I guess!

Soooooo.....
The globs of white glue have dried, so here's the other end of the left section we worked on.
Mainly installing backdrop photos, flats, fence and doing some ground cover, bushes & (small) trees:

[The hinge at the upper right behind the gon will be covered by a removeable power house]

When trying to put some static grass on, we put the white glue down, then tried to push the grounding T-pin for our fly-swatter static grass applicator.
Took about 3-4 hard pushes to remember we used MDF, not pink foam, on this layout.
 D'oh!

So just sprinkled it on with our hands, rolling it with our fingers whle letting it fall onto the white glue.
A few passes with the vacuum got some to stand up, but otherwise it turnout out ok:

At first the slightly-diluted white glue dried very shiny, to the point you could see the edges of the glue!
We took a tooth brush, dipped in dirt and scrubbed the grass.
This seemed to tone it down.
Then we sprinkled a little more dirt & "weed" fine ground foam around & through the grass area, then re-wetted with booze and diluted white glue.
That seemed to blend the grass, dirt & foam a bit better.

Here's the whole backdrop scene so far:

And here's a closeup of the photo-flat industry with gravel road and fence:

Was thinking of putting a photo of an aircraft carrier in there, but a bit cheezy (& already had the navy planes down at the other end), and I liked the color / contrast to the nearby brick structures.

Still need to build the oil-transfer shed and set up the oil storage tanks, but otherwise the left side of the layout is moving along pretty well.
 Thanks for looking.
