kicking around an N Scale plan

givens, 15"x96" layout, well build staging cassettes until more is built

Druthers, Southern Pacific, 1980's. locals powered by a pair of 4 axle locos, switching based, local is Casa Grande, AZ, wherethe track is straight as a rail....for miles. the 3 industries are a grain elevator (hoppers), oil dealer (tank cars) and a cotton gin (box cars), I am thinking about not scratchbuilding the station, but using a type 22 station like what burnt down in 1937 (ironically, the art deco station burnt down in 2009).

Any suggestions guys?

You've got enough room, how about including a runaround and reversing the direction of a siding or two to spice up the switching moves?

I'd suggest considering longer turnouts, esp. on the crossovers.  At 96" it doesn't look like you'd need to trade off too much for that.

David, I have thought of the same things....only issue is the prototype, all switches are east bound, and the siding dead ends just east of the grain elevator.

well, then the conundrum is following the prototype or making operations more fun. It all depends on what will make you sleep better; having a close as I can get it layout, or a fun ops layout.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the cotton gin turns out. Living in the Southeast (especially in South Kackalacky), I could very easily add one to the list of industries I could include on a layout. Only prob is I suck at research (for now)

out here, cotton gins are large, corrugated steel buildings that kind of look like a modern coal mine

David, here is the east end of town where the elevator is, the ties were where the station was

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=32.872846&lon=-111.751087&z=17.6&r=0&src=msl

A little further north west is the oil distributor....

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=32.877239&lon=-111.756317&z=17.6&r=0&src=msl

and further northwest is the abandoned gin just south of a modern plastics plant

The only 1980's industry that I know that I missing is Fertizona,on the far east end of town, just west of Peart

The next fun thing to model will be in Eloy to the southeast
http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=32.7585&lon=-111.577202&z=16.4&r=0&src=msl

or Maricopa to the northwest (nothing really) There is also a wye in Estrella to the southwest

an interesting siding further west

It looks like I am going to go through a divorce (no, I did not do anything wrong). My larger Gila Sub of the Sunset Route's Tucson Division looks to be on hold, what do you guys think about stretching out a tymewaster to have double the normal space to place/replace 2 cars and use either 2 4 axle road switchers or a U30C? I have all of the nesacary turnouts, and would senic it to look like the Gila Sub....brown and all....

Sorry to hear about that. BTDT, not fun. There are a number of interesting features further up the line; are you thinking of cherry-picking features to include on the longer plan, or are you going to stay relatively proto?

I would like to  stay more proto than not, but this would besimplya chainsaw...$30 in wood, $50 in track, add a few cars, convert to DCC, build some buildings, basic scenery...less than $200 that will go away....
