Limited market for these, but B unit grills with the etched 3D "NORTHERN PACIFIC" would be nice, to replace the painted on hack jobs on the IM Fs. Etched replacement grills for tractors would be nice too, like the Atlas L9000 (like Plano does) and the Con Cor oldies.

Man a truck detail set would be awsome! Grills, mudflaps, rear view mirrors, bumpers, sun visors, wind deflectors. There is a ton of stuff that could be done. The only company that ever made etched truck parts was Linside. They made rear view mirrors only, and those are long gone.

Good Luck with your new venture David!

I am hoping you will be able to bring a Code 30 Rail to the masses.  ;D

Come to think of it, you really need that size rail for your new Z scale G&D layout, don't you?   :-X

+1 here.  7', 8', and 9' doors (Superior, Youngstown, Pullman) sized to fix Intermountain and M/T PS-1 cars would help us model a wide variety of 40-foot cars.

  Frank

Micro Trains makes some of this already (various doors, brake wheels, etc.); see http://www.micro-trains.com/pl-Parts.php .

In a similar vein, does any know whether Precision Scale (or anyone else) still makes N-scale AB brake parts (triple valve, reservoir, actuator)?  If not, that would be useful.

Yes, I have these in my parts bin, but the M/T "8-foot" doors are closer to 7-footers.  Which is good for many prototypes...

Let me put the calipers on them over the weekend and report back to the group.

Frank,

You're absolutely right - we need doors.

While MT detail part exist, one issue with the doors, besides size and a limited variety of types, is that the tackboards are cast on. Considering tack boards where sitauted in a variety of places depending on manufacturer, RR, build lot, shop, etc. it's nice to NOT have these parts cast on; so if a modeler wants to go the extra distance to choose correct doors, s/he can select the proper tackboard placement as well. I'm sure most people won't care, but some of us do.

I care, but you must admit that adding/removing a tackboard is not that difficult.  Even cutting up a door to make it narrower or wider is doable, given that the material in question is plastic.

That being said, if someone is willing to make additional doors, I'm all for it.

No, it's not, depending on the materials. There are aftermarket etched doors available. Better than M-T's, IM's are tackboard-free.

I'd like to see the door idea expanded, and have car ends and roofs available too. It would be nice not having to butcher two or three cars to get one. IM's modular design gives us some parts which can be ordered separately but in this case I think more would be better.

David,

Another item that is sorely needed is an etched fret of ice reefer roof ice-hatch latches.  Those Micro-Trains Delrin ones are really oversized.  Lotsa reefers out there methinks, and I could use several hundred of 'em! An easy one-step etch in stainless.

How about some cast pewter passenger car interior details? Like, seats and tables (with plates, cups, saucers, maybe "food" and a table cloth)...make 'em in several styles (large, small, round, rectangular, square).  Add some etched interior doors, some Venetian blinds that are close to scale, and some cast Pewter waiters, head waiters, conductors, nurses, attendants, bartenders, cooks etc.

You could even make "train" specific crew sets.  As a proud owner of Kato's new COLA passenger car set, I am in the process of adding 4 more cars, researching window tinting protocols, and replacing ALL of the cast-on grabs with .007" stainless wire grabs and using M&R sides etched passenger car details to enhance some of the cast Kato details.  I'm also doing some research on the E-units used (snowshields or not, replacing cast-on grills, truck paint, etc.) and I would be your first customer for cast passengers to populate each car as well as a complete train crew.  I'm sure there are N scalers out there who would purchase the same for their Kato Santa Fe passenger trains, SP Daylights, California Zephyrs, etc.
etc.  Adding people to your passenger trains brings 'em to life.

One last thing while I'm thinking about it tonight.  Cabooses again...scale sized and prototypical looking marker lamps with appropriately sized red and green (or amber) MV lenses are REALLY needed.  Yeah, there's at least one manufacturer who makes little blobs of pewter which are supposed to pass as caboose marker lamps.  A better effort would really be appreciated.

'Nuff said for tonight

Similarly to train specific details, I'd be down for additional steam locomotive parts. Headlights, numberboard mounts, bells, train control boxes, air pumps, etc. Scenic details such as milk cans, trash cans, fire hydrants, and mailboxes would also be welcome. :)
Good luck on your venture, not that you'd need it. I'm sure with the quality and dedication put into your work, you'll have no problem producing and selling whichever items you choose to make.

Well Guilford Guy, you wanted N-scale mailboxes? Try these on for size.

Please note the size comparison. That is a to scale standard mailbox on a 4x4 post.

I want to be able to modify my engines for details in N like you can in HO.  Doors were hit by BLMA, granted they're expensive...a blank GP/SD long hood,  a thin wall "standard" dimensional cab (Kato, Atlas, IM - almost all different in details) and a grouping of short hoods 81', 88' 116' etc - compatible with various different existing locomotives.
In all of this Mark4 has been extremely helpful.
I stand by plows - weed cutter variety - like those from sunrise.
a "ditch light" kit for various engines...
Someone should make a GP11.  That'd be nice.  call that a detail part for a GP9.

Common people, have some sense about you... this is nearly a two year old thread, so...

1) There were no such part available from Shapeways at the time.

2) Apparently nothing is going to happen in regards to parts since there has been no update.

Detailed Elesco feedwater heaters like those placed under the front of the smoke box on most AT&SF steam bigger than a 2-8-0.  Santa Fe steam without that big cylinder between the front steps is incomplete.

Thanks, Mark
