I Hope that everyone remembers that during the transition era trains steam and diesel  ran with their headlights off during the day ,passing trains flashed them at each other and Mars/Gyralights were turned on and used as needed during daylight hours. By the late 60's I believe lights were left on all the time, don't know when ditchlights on Canadian Diesels first came into use ,but I would bet during the headlight off era, some Canadian trains might have run with ditch lights lighted on F Units, but headlight out in day time. Can anyone confirm this. My Canadian train rides were in 1968/69,the all lights on in daytime era.                                Nate Goodman (Nato).

Prototype Schmototype.  I keep the headlights on all the time, it lets me know that the engine's getting track power, and through the miracle of technology, what direction it's pointed in.  And on my layout, with its myriad twists, turns tunnels and subterranean staging, it also helps me know where they are!!  As such, the dimming setting is a good feature to have, providing a little bridge between the worlds of modeling trains and operating them...

Lee the time period you mostly model it's appropriate to keep the lights on.  Since I did a lot of railfanning on the WM back then, I remember the headlights always being on.

True, Bob.  But I also leave them burning on mid-consist units as well.  It just helps if something goes amiss during the run to know if one of the units is down...

Also, I kind of like when they're bright... it's fun watching the shadows on the wall during "night" running!  Especially through the truss bridge... :D

So does a real engineer..Reversing headlights is a model thing since locomotive headlights is turned on by a switch and both headlights will be on bright even during the day and especially while switching. Now when a yard crew takes a break the headlights will be placed on dim. That is to show another crew there is a standing engine occupying that track.

I dropped a new NCE decoder into a recently acquired Atlas B23-7 and you know what? The new LEDs are WAY too bright. They light up the entire cab area like there's a movie shoot going on inside, and blow the number boards all the way out.

Anyone have any suggestions (short of unsoldering them) for darkening these things up in a controllable way?

If you think that is annoying go over to the TRAINBOARD forum and read the first post on the topic entitled Hiawatha packaging opinion.   Here while Pennsy people are literally begging for a K4 or an M1 and this guy gets a whole freakin passenger train and what does he complain about?    THE BOX!  He complains about the freakin box it came in!!!    Is it April or did my calendar stop?

Some people complain about anything.  Guy must be complete dipstick.  I kinda like the box.  It reminds me of the boxes Lional and American Flyer used years back.  Sort of a nostalgic thing.  Now back to lights.

Same guy that wanted the set discounted due to it being behind the scheduled delivery date.

I try not to troll, as I do like some of the guys over there, but that guy got the best of me.  I bit, he bit harder, and was asked to leave.
