Scratching a Clearstory roof in N (Solicitation for ideas)

As some of y'all know, I'm using Lee's Golden Spike train as impetus to finally model a typical Norfolk Southern passenger train of the late '40s.

While doing most of the car from etched bits is fairly easy, the roof is proving to be a bit of a challenge.

The roofs from heavywheight cars currently available all have several problems that make them unusable for my application.  These include things such as incorrect profile, length, and the center portion of them all is too wide.

Any suggestions for surmounting this problem would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Iain,

Could you post some pictures/diagrams of what you're trying to create?

I know what a celestory roof is, but not enough about the particular one you're working with to make intelligent suggestions.

Thanks...

3D solid model.

And save up enough money to print it with the green stuff:

Somewhere years back I read an article about making these roofs.  Used balsa blocks cut, carved and sander into the shapes he wanted.  Sounds like a lot of work but I remember the photos and they looked decent.

One thing I've considered doing is taking a Lima roof, removing the middle portion, and working from there.

That is two months of someone's life that they are not getting back. Wow!

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Clerestory and clearstory are interchangeable.

Turns out both Iain and Skibbe were correct (never thought I would write that sentence). In spite of its widespread usage, celestory is not really a word. I stand corrected. In our next installment of the OED playground, we will discuss the proper use of mullion and muntin!  ;)

Still waiting to see what it is you are trying to make.

Best wishes, Dave

After doing some research into the Clearstory roofs, and finding some photos of the interior of other ACF-built wood cars of the time, I'm going to scratchbuild.  My plan is to etch all the parts and then sheath with paper.

This is what I'm building:

Interior of a different car built at the same place at the same time:

The whole train will consist of three of the above coaches, an RPO, a baggage car, boxcar, and Jim Crow coach, which is similar to the coach pictured above except that there is a baggage compartment in the center.  Power will be either a ten wheeler or pair of 70 tonners depending on what I feel like running at that moment.
